Avant de voir la moindre bande-annonce, le casting, le genre et le synopsis m’alléchaient . Un autre film de SF avec Tom Cruise? “Minority Report”, “La Guerre des mondes” et “Oblivion” m’avaient définitivement convaincu qu’il s’agit-là d’un genre qui convient tout à fait à l’acteur . Ne connaissant pas le manga dont s’inspire ce film, je reportai donc toute mon attention sur la bande-annonce qui me fit saliver d’envie.Blockbuster à la fois élaboré au niveau du scénario et finalement facile à suivre, “Edge of tomorrow” signe la rencontre improbable entre “l’artillerie lourde ” déjà déployée dans “Starship troopers” et le vertige d’une journée destinée à recommencer au sein d’une même boucle temporelle, avec possibilité d’en améliorer à chaque fois le déroulement, comme dans “Un jour sans fin”. A la fois simple et excitant pour l’imagination, le scénario remplit son contrat : susciter l’attention et ne pas perdre en route le spectateur.Transposé dans un contexte de guerre futuriste assez proche, avec débauche d’effets visuels et sonores attendus, l’histoire m’a tenu en éveil pendant 2 heures. Vif, intelligent, très bien interprété et filmé par un réalisateur ayant le sens du cadrage et surtout du montage, “Edge of tomorrow” ne devrait pas décevoir les amateurs de SF contemporaine.Sur écran géant, l’image est parfaitement équilibrée sur chaque plan et le son remplit à la perfection l’espace sonore. Bien que le blu-ray ne soit pas encore disponible, je ne doute pas du fait qu’il saura pleinement exploiter le potentiel de la HD pour ne pas trahir le travail colossal réalisé en matière de photographie, couleurs,son et effets spéciaux. Je complèterai d’ailleurs ce commentaire de remarques d’ordre technique en temps et en heure.Le 23 octobre 2014 : blu-ray reçu ce jour et impression sensiblement la même qu’au cinéma:- Film visionné en VO anglais 7.1 DTS-HD. Image exempte de défaut, colorimétrie très poussée et sens du détail remarquable (de jour lors des “multiples débarquements” et de nuit).- Son impeccablement découpé et puissant sur les 3 enceintes de mon home cinema acheté en 2000 (qui s’adapte encore parfaitement aux normes audio d’aujourd’hui) Effets et voix remarquablement répartis. 5 pistes sonores disponibles (anglais, anglais audio-description, français,italien espagnol) avec 13 choix de sous-titres.-Bonus = modules sur le débarquement, les armes du futur, au bord du gouffre avec Doug Liman, scènes coupées, etc..Un sans-faute absolu. Un vrai blu-ray de démonstration.

Damn good movie – “groundhog day” theme taken to an excellent action level. One of the better Tom Cruise Movies going around right now, but then again I really liked “Oblivion”, “Vanilla Sky”, and “Minority Report”. I liked the movie “Jack Reacher”, just kept wishing Tom Cruise hadn’t been in it – IMHO he never looked rough enough to be a Jack Reacher, and his acting was kinda wooden – so maybe it’s just me. BUT THEN THERE’S EMILY BLUNT – but holy cow! I gotta a girl-crush on this lady. Her action films are just as dynamite as any other genre she’s made, and she just looks go-oo-od even dirty and beat up and in a large rubber suit. And of course, she not can act circles around Tom Cruise, but helps make his character. The story is pretty well done, but some of the details were odd. Like these aliens are totally destroying everything but they never made it out of Europe in 5 years? That seemed kinda weird to me. What was in the Louvre’ that they needed so badly? Were they Illuminati? lol. I digress.Bill Paxton needs to figure out that a right cross of “georgia peach” mixed with his upper-cut west-texan drawl does NOT make a Kentucky accent. I’ve seen several films lately that has some heavily accented Ky characters in them, but there is a HUGE difference between Eastern KY and Western KY and Louisville. (Best KY accent in a movie – Patrick Swayze in “Next of Kin”) I wish directors would find that out without having to make Coal-Miner’s Daughter or Nell, all over again. But Bill does a great job in his role, that the accent becomes forgivable. The UDF General Brigham, played by Brendan Gleeson, does perfectly as a deep-thinking, yet myopic, fighting leader, who really is not equipped to fight aliens, as he is trying to recreate D-Day on Normandy Beach. Which as anyone who’s ever watched “Saving Private Ryan”, would not attempt to do in combat, ever again.The Bonus features are ok but painfully short.

No, despite how it sounds, it’s not boring and it’s not repetitive!In Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow, Tom Cruise plays an American officer taken from his soft job to take part in a Normandy invasion to take the offensive against an alien entity that has crashed into the earth in Germany that threatens to wipe mankind from the face of the planet.Tom Cruise is an unwilling participant in the invasion where the humans find themselves taking massive casualties as the aliens somehow know they are coming. Cruise is no warrior and he stumbles around a beachhead reminiscent of Saving Private Ryan as far as bloody disaster. Of course, cruise is killed – but not before he kills a very special mimic (the name for the alien adversaries) and is changed. Having been killed, he wakes up in the day before the invasion to relive the experience again, but with a twist.The reluctant warrior learns more and more each time he relives the invasion…and is made aware of the reason he comes back to life after getting killed and how this ties into the only way the alien entity can be defeated. Tom Cruise is the only man who can defeat the alien and save mankind.The special effects are excellent, but never trump the plot or the excellent acting. I am no fan of Cruise, but he does an excellent job in this film as does his costar, Emily Blunt. This film blends drama with a surprising amount of clever humor. The film itself is rather tame as far as language and sexual content. The violence is not as graphic as other sci-fi films, but you won’t miss it. I certainly didn’t!This is a fine sci-fi film that will also appeal to action/adventure fans. This is a film that can be enjoyed by a wider audience that doesn’t need skin or f-bombs to keep the viewer’s interest. I give it five stars.

For the benefit of consumers, I will post the technical details of the product which are absent along with my review.Video Quality:The Video quality is fantastic throughout on this blu ray disc. Razor sharp clarity, great colour depth and black levels. There are no artifacts or distortion in the image. Not a trace of compression. The video quality is extremely clean, beautiful and pleasant to the eye.Audio Quality:The audio of the main movie is encoded not in Dolby but in dts HD Master Audio 7.1, which is great. I was apprehensive about buying it because the description just said Dolby without giving any other details. Not only is this information wrong but it will turn away potential customers who care about audio. However, I was pleased to see the audio was lossless dts. The mix on this movie is absolutely phenomenal. When using a 5.1 or a 7.1 system, this film is a real treat in terms of audio. Not only is the audio very high fidelity but the mix has a great dynamic range with crystal clear high frequencies and also really forceful low end which hit you in the chest during the intense action sequences. The surrounds are used very generously and aren’t just thrown in to remind you that you’re listening to 5.1 audio. They are used as much as possible which really puts you in the middle of the scene.Finally, the film itself is a really entertaining watch. It is an extremely well shot, well edited film with witty dialogue and intense, jaw dropping action sequences. If you’re a Sci-Fi fan, do not miss this title. It’s definitely worth a watch.

Cruise is excellent in this time-warping sci-fi flick
It is often easy to overlook just what a fine actor Tom Cruise is because in most of his recent films he has been cast as the heroic figure in action movies that focus more on his physical prowess than his ability to portray a character.In “Live, Die, Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow” Cruise is once again portraying an action hero but there is a difference: In this movie he is NOT always brave. In fact, in the beginning of this time-warping, science fiction film he is downright cowardly. His ability to make us believe that aspect of his character shows us, as viewers, just how very talented an actor he really is.The movie, directed by Doug Liman and co-starring the marvelous Emily Blunt, is a truly excellent bit of film making that could easily have gone off the rails. It deals with an alien invasion of Earth and has a definite “Groundhog Day” vibe given the fact that Cruise’s character is stuck in a time loop. Each time he dies time is reset and he wakes up on the day before the battle in which he is killed. It’s a fascinating concept but one that could easily confuse – and ultimately frustrate – viewers if not handled correctly. Thanks to Liman’s direction, a well-done screenplay, and Cruise’s ability to inject humor into the time loop sequences viewers are able to follow a clear path to what turns out to be a dramatic conclusion.This movie has been reviewed thousands of times so it’s not my intention to discuss the cinematography, the plot, and other aspects of it in depth. I will point out that in this film the late Bill Paxton showed once again why he was considered one of America’s finest character actors. His portrayal of the sergeant in charge of the platoon that Cruise winds up being assigned to, is spot on. I’ll also add that Blunt, as the “Full Metal Bitch” with a reputation for killing alien invaders, is terrific in the role.That said, I’ll sum it up this way: Great performances, smooth direction, and some truly unique alien invaders make this a 5-star film.

A fun film to watch. As a retired Marine, l didn’t like Cruise’s character wearing our uniform— they could have made changes—but it was great to see him put in his place every time he tries to bug out.AND Elizabeth Blunt is perfect. She works to do everything necessary for that character to come to life.

Not a big Tom Cruise fan…but this is such a good film…I’ll cut him some slack…that and of course Emily Blunt…the rule of course is …never piss off Emily….well worth the time
