A Good Starter Beardsman Kit…Could Be Better
When it comes to mustache & beard grooming kits I’m very picky as it pertains to what I call a “complete” grooming kit, especially when the manufacturer advertises their product as such. For my specifications there needs to be at least a beard wash (or shampoo), conditioner, trim scissors, comb, a good quality brush as well as a good quality beard oil and balm. While ZHYN doesn’t advertise their 7 piece grooming kit as a complete set, it comes pretty close. The only item missing from this kit for my complete liking is a beard conditioner. Even as it were this is one of the more comprehensive kits I’ve seen in quite sometime.The beard wash is a good sample size. Works well for giving the facial hair a good cleaning and removing oils and other toxins. It works well with just a small amount. I typically use the wash when I’m in the shower. I massage it into the beard and let it set for a few minutes while cleaning other parts of my body before rinsing it out. The beard oil and balm is not offensive in scent. It’s pretty much typical and what you’d expect in these type of products. The beard oil has known ingredients purported to strengthen beard hairs and promote hair growth. The balm is a good styling utility. A little goes a long way. Also works well for keeping the rogue hairs of my mustache in check.The hardware in this kit I can’t give the same kind of glowing review. First off the comb while it has the look of being made out of wood, I’m not certain that’s the case. It feels inauthentic. The material feels more plasticky than wood. It’s been durable in use thus far but I found myself relying more on a proper wood beard and mustache comb I already have. Additionally the brush has that same feel of inauthenticity. I have two beard brushes that are manufactured with boar hairs. They work tremendously at traveling through the depths of my beard hair right down to the roots. It also feels good to use. I found the brush in this kit from ZHYN not to be as massaging as I would want. It doesn’t get deep down to the skin – to the roots to brush deeply within. I also found some bristles from the brush had fell out. Using the brush doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence.The scissors are standard fare. Small and sharp, they handle the responsibility of trimming hair just fine. The straight edge razor was an unexpected surprise. Having used many grooming kits for my beard over the years, this is the first time a straight edge razor has been included with any of the kits I’ve used. The blade is sharp and does a very solid job at trimming. It’s a good piece of hardware I must admit. The storage bag is a good size and will hold most of the items included with the kit.Even with the hits and misses I found in this kit, it’s priced low enough to be considered something of a starter or beginner kit. Not something I would gift to a seasoned beardsman but for someone just starting out this would be ideal. My only real gripe is that I wished the comb and brush felt of a higher quality as they really bring down the overall presentation of this kit in my opinion. This scores a 3.85 out of 5.00 for a 4 star rating.

I also could not find a batch or lot number on the beard balm I received.The accessories were mixed for me. The comb appears to be plastic. The brush shed a few bristles during inspection. The scissors do cut, although I found the finger holes somewhat uncomfortable to use.The main positive is that the kit does include a wide assortment of beard-grooming tools and products in a single package.
