Why did I use a Mach 3 for so long?

This is the first product review I’ve written on Amazon. Nothing I bought here before has really inclined me to take the trouble, but this little razor, well – it’s almost life-changing. Bold statement to make for something as insignificant as a shaving implement, but it’s warranted in this case.I used to look at shaving as a necessary annoyance. It wasn’t pleasant, but my wife doesn’t like a beard so I made myself do it. But being as annoyance, I usually slacked off in doing it which resulted in my shaving once a week, if that (my beard doesn’t grow terribly fast). Which resulted in my usually sporting a few days’ worth of beard, an unkempt look. However, once I picked up this razor, all that changed. Why? To put it simply, what used to be a necessary annoyance has become a pleasure I look forward to. Seriously. I now wish my beard grew faster so I could shave daily.Using a safety razor necessitates a few other things: a good shaving soap/cream (I recommend the Omega shaving soap available from amazon), a good brush (badger hair is best), and using an aftershave is advised, if not necessary. All these things feel great on the skin and are just plain *fun* to use. It also necessitates that you pay attention to what you’re doing rather than just going through the motions. However, the reward is a shave that’s much closer to anything you’ve ever managed with the multi-blade razors while at the same time feeling easier on your face. No razor burn, just smooth skin.Last but not least, hell, using the safety razor/brush combo just makes you feel… male. Now, about this particular razor:- Quality: very good. It’s heavy and feels like a solid, quality tool in your hand. Doesn’t rust and is easy to rinse.- Design: excellent. The butterfly design makes it easy to replace blades and remove them to rinse after shaving. The shape of the razor helps find the correct angle for shaving. It’s hard to describe, but to put it in simplest terms it just fits naturally: placing it against your face in the way that feels natural ends up being just the right angle.- Cuts and hacking up your face: complete myth. It’s not difficult at all to shave without ever nicking yourself (I think I’ve done it twice in 2 months).Note about multi-blade razors:They’re dominant in the market not because they’re superior to the safety razors, but due to profit margins. Anyone can make razor blades for safety razors and as a result, they’re available for around $0.10. However, the Mach3, etc. cartridges are only made by their manufacturers and by controlling their manufacture, they’re able to jack up the price – they can cost over $3.00 each. Makes sense from a profit standpoint.

    Fantastic Razor

I actually got back into using a safety razor when I saw one at a local “dollar” store and bought it. I like the sound and feel of the double edge razor vs. the multi-blade razors which I had been using. It reminded me of the old days when a barber used a straight razor – the sound of the blade smoothly scraping across the skin. That dollar razor felt nice, but I had to be very careful using it or I’d cut myself shaving. Also, I’d have to unscrew the handle in order to change the blade. I decided to look online and upgrade to a nicer razor – since they are not to be found in any retail stores around here. I decided on the Parker 90R because it was not very expensive and had the “butterfly open” feature, which I remembered from when I was young. I give it 5 stars. When I used it for the first time it was so smooth that I was not sure it was cutting – but it was. It gives an excellent shave – very smooth and still gives the sound and feel of a blade scraping across the skin. Blades are super-cheap compared to the disposable razors, and I don’t feed so environmentally wasteful since I am not throwing away an entire plastic handle when I need a new blade. The weight is perfect, as is the length of the handle. I never liked an electric razor because they don’t work as well as a blade, you have to keep them recharged and I like the fresh feeling of using water on my face. This razor is an excellent choice. If you are switching back to this type of shaving, just drag the razor a little more slowly across your face than you would a multi-blade razor. I find the shave better and much more refreshing. With this Parker 90R I have not cut myself, which I had done with the old razors when I was younger. Its weight and the curvature of the shield above the blade reduce/eliminate cuts. Again, just go a little slower and enjoy the shave. You’ll get excellent results.

    Best Ever!

I used double-edged razors when I first started shaving; I remember the blue steel blades. One may as well have shoved your face into a fan. Then stainless steel came out (Wilkinson), which were a big improvement. Then injector stainless steel were a new convenience: you could not get cut handling blades. Great, thought we. The next step was the single blade disposables. Nice. Then 2-blade, then 3-blade, and I even think 4-blade, both in disposables and fancy “systems”. It sort of became like dragging a hi-tech cheese grater over your face, and paying incredible prices to do so. A few weeks ago I saw a segment of How It’s Made that showed a double-edged Merkur being assembled. I was intrigued by the elegance of the thing, and decided to revisit double-edged razors. Starting with a cheapie razor and some Feather blades, I was astonished by the smooth and close shave. So then I bought this Parker long-handle unit. What a great piece of engineering. Great shave, nice heft, elegant to look at, and it cleans easily. I could not be more pleased! Great product that will not break the bank. Look no further.

    Fantastic Razor

I ordered this razor because I wanted a brand new twist-to-open model instead of a vintage, and I didn’t want to pay the steep price of a Merkur Vision. I was a little apprehensive about getting a Parker because some of the reviews available on the internet were indicating some quality control issues while others had nothing but praise. I noticed that the negative reviews were generally older, hopefully indicating that the QC issues were resolved. When I unpacked the razor I was impressed with the quality of the finish. I won’t lie – it looked much better than my workhorse Merkur 34C.I lathered up and decided it was time to see if this was just a pretty face with no substance, or if this was the real deal. With a Shark Stainless Steel blade, the shave this little thing gave was fantastic! I couldn’t believe it. I used this blade for three or four days and the result never changed.I also gave this razor a run-down using Astra Platinum, Derby Extra, Feather, and Shark Super Chrome blades. The only one that I wasn’t pleased with was the Derby, but I’ve yet to have a good shave from a Derby.I’ve been wet shaving for about 10 years now. I don’t do anything special – my routine is a shower immediately followed by a shave. I use a cheap pure badger shaving brush and some Proraso shaving cream. Overall, this razor seriously outshaved my Merkur 34C at every turn. For the most part, it seemed the only way I could cut myself is to do something intentionally bad. I write the nicks the Derby gave me off as the fault of the blade, not the razor.I generally do one pass with the grain and one pass against, and this razor was able to give me baby-smooth results every time. It’s important to note that the quality of your shave will vary based on your razor, your blade, your beard, and your skin. What works for one man may very well not work for another. I think this razor is mild enough that very few people should have any issue with it, however. You must make sure the blade gap is even on each side before completely closing the butterfly doors. Failure to do so will leave one side of the razor cutting way more aggressively than the other.I am very pleased with my Parker 90R and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it.

    Excellent first razor

(Written by husband)I’ve never written a review before, but I feel compelled to write after using this razor for 2 weeks.I used to use Gillette Fusion cartridge razors and other iterations for the past 25 years, but this razor has changed everything for me.To be blunt (no pun), this razor is freakin’ awesome! The chrome finishing is very smooth and the lock/hinge twist-to-open (TTO) mechanism is easy to use and locks the blade tight. The handle had grooves in the chrome but I feel the handle can be a bit slippery when trying to open/close the head with wet hands.Double-Edge (DE) shaving is experiencing a resurgence recently as folks are getting fed up with the high cost of multi-blade cartridge razors (Mach3, Fusion, etc.).I remember my father shaving with a (now “vintage”) Gillette adjustable DE razor when I was a kid. He couldn’t wait to throw it away in favor of the new pivot-head disposables (shame, those old “vintage” Gillettes are going for over $100 on eBay now.). His reason (30 years ago) was the blades at the time couldn’t hold an edge. That has all changed. Which brings me to my next point.Blade edge design is different from each manufacturer. At the “dull” (ie, less-sharp) end of the scale are Derby, while Feather blades are at the extreme “sharp” end of the scale. There are dozens of choices in between. Your skin will tell you which blade is right for you. If my dad still had his “vintage” Gillette, fitted with these new blades would be just as good.Bulk price for replacement blades are between $0.06-$0.20 per blade. Each blade should last between 3-5 shaves. So depending on your shave pattern, a 100 pack of assorted blades should easily last a year and cost pennies per shave. This Parker 90R razor NEEDS to be paired with a decent assortment of blades. All DE blades are made to a certain “spec”, but some fit better than others and suit different skin types. The Shark super chrome blades that shipped with this razor are OK on with my dense hair growth. Those new to DE shaving (like me) should go through the entire box of blades before attempting to try any other blades from an assortment pack in order to perfect your technique. In order to respect this razor the fine piece of hardware it is, you need to perfect your technique first, then evaluate different blades to find the one that matches this razor AND your face.I’m still working through my first box of Shark blades, but I did try a “Sharp Durablade” from one of the assortment packs and it’s a different experience. The “Sharp” blade was a smoother shave, but required more passes to clear the hair growth because the blade wasn’t as sharp as the Shark blade.I’ve never had as close a shave as with this razor. Multi-blade cartridge blades don’t even come close! My normal routine:1) Hot shower to soften the hair growth2) While skin is still wet, apply a pre-shave oil to the skin (I use Village Barber oil from the UK, but you can go cheap with baby oil or even olive oil but they make a mess.)3) Soak the boar-hair brush in warm water for at least a minute to soften the bristles, also soak the razor/blade in warm water4) Shake off excess water from the brush, apply decent cream (I use Taylor of Bond Street) to the brush and whip up a nice lather in a bowl (add a few drops of water at a time until lather is creamy)5) Apply cream to skin with brush with a circular motion to work into the hair follicles6) Shave one pass “with the grain”, relather, shave one pass “sideways to the grain”, re-wet skin and feel for missed spots, relather and shave “against the grain” for only those spots you missed using a very light touch (avoids razor “burn”).7) Rinse skin with cold water to seal the pores and apply a nice shaving balm to nourish the skin (you just removed the top layer!).Buy this razor (or any decent DE razor) and an assortment blade kit. You’ll never look back.

    A worthwhile purchase

I have had this razor for more than a month, and have the hang of it now. When I first started shaving my father gave me a safety razor to use. Somewhere along the way I switched to using those expensive brand name razors. In retrospect, it was a big mistake. When I first got this razor I used some generic blades that I already had. On my very first shave with the generic blades it was like a new experience. The blade glided over my skin like it was not doing anything. I had to go over my face with my hand to realize that it was actually cutting my hair. Even though I could not feel it cutting, my face was baby butt smooth. At first I had a problem shaving beneath my nose, but after a few tries I figured it out.My only complaints are that the handle was not as long as I thought. The second thing is that there is no way to tell the sides of the blade apart. I like to shave with one side and when that gets dull switch to the other side. My final complaint is that the handle is kind of slippery. When the soap lather gets on your hand it can be tough to hang onto. I use glycerin soap rather than shave cream, because it is much smoother and slicker. I have far fewer nicks with the glycerin soap than when I used brand name shaving cream. My final warning for people using those expensive triple blades is; at the first sign of trouble abandon ship. Those 3 blade razors are so expensive that I got used to trying to push it for one extra shave. With the safety razor that is not an option. If you try to stretch it, it will tear you up. Besides, the blades are not so expensive that you need to stretch it. Just toss the old blade and start fresh. So far I have used generic blades, Shark, and Feather blades. The generic blades were not bad at all. They actual gave me a good serviceable shave. The Shark blades were the thinnest and sharpest I tried, and definitely gave me the smoothest cut. On the downside, they did not last that long. The Feather blade was a consistent clean cut and seemed to last a good bit longer that the others. The blades are cheap enough that I will probably re-order Shark blades when I run out, but your mileage may vary. Depending on the type of beard and how you shave different blades may work better for you. The main thing is to use a fresh blade as often as needed. If I could tell which side was which, and a grippier handle it would be perfect.

Quality finish, excellent balance and all around great razor!

The Parker 90R is my first safety razor. I have been thinking about making the switch for a few months and did a little research prior to making the purchase. I liked the idea of not only spending less each month on shaving supplies but also experiencing fewer if any in-grown hairs and skin irritation caused by the triple blades currently offered. I was impressed by the finish and quality of this razor. It has some weight to it making it feel like you are holding something of substance. I chose the Parker 90R mostly based on the great reviews but mostly because of two features. The first was the longer handle. It is more like the Mach 3, Shick or any other modern razors that I’m used to. The second is the butterfly feature. This makes changing blades very easy. You simply twist the bottom until the doors open, drop in the blade and tighten it down. There is definitely a learning curve. My first attempt ended in a few nicks and a fair amount of razor burn on my neck which is more sensitive to begin with. I have used disposable and multi-blade cartridges my whole life and the bad habits that they put you in are evident. Here are some things that I’ve learned that hopefully will help a fellow newbie. First the blade angle is important, they say to hold it at about 30 degrees. I learned how to do this by placing the top of the blade head on my face and gently moving it into position. Second and most important for me was not to put pressure on the blade. I feel that modern razors make you press into the skin in order to get a closer shave. Safety razors use the weight of the razor itself. You need to take your time, use short strokes and allow the razor to do its job. I have no additional safety razor to compare this to but I can say that I really have enjoyed the whole shaving experience. Shaving is a chore, but now I kind of look forward to it. I believe that this is great product,I’m sure that you can spend a handsome sum on a “better razor” but I see no point. I am a Parker fan!

    Does the job well.

It’s quite utilitarian. The revolving nature of the stem to close may create some problems, one might be required to ensure that it’s nicely fastened prior to using it.A good purchase for your first foray into the world of wet shaving.

    Won’t stay closed

I’m not new to single-blade razors. This one looks great, but it has a couple of serious issues. First, the head loosens by itself almost every single time I use it. That’s a recipe for getting sliced. Second, the middle of the handle is completely smooth; a poor design choice because as soon as any shaving soap hits that part, it makes it extremely slippery. Third, for whatever reason, the shave is extremely rough. Again, I know how to use these razors so it’s not user error, and I even transferred the blade back to my old razor to make sure it wasn’t just a bad blade. It wasn’t.Would not recommend this particular model.

  10. Abhijit DC (comprador verificado)

    Aggressive razor

It is an aggressive razor. Quality is above average. Not for everyday use. Need to use preshave oil for avoiding cuts. The chrome finish on one of the butterfly flaps lost color. Seemed like a stain initially but couldn’t clean it.

  11. Customer (comprador verificado)

    Classic vintage product, great

Excellent I am happy to purchase a very classic vintage product with excellent finesse. Of course a conventional Professional packing was a icing on the cake. My best wishes and keep up your good work.

  12. Shantamay (comprador verificado)

An expensive item but facing design flaws

The Parker razor is a renowned brand and product. However with this razor I am facing a design flaw and not impressed. First the butterfly joints not tightly closing leaving the blade to move a bit causing cuts. Secondly there head to the mid section there is a weight disbalance which means that while the razor head should smoothly glide down for a stroke, it seems to stop and hence one has to force a drag down. This again creates the chance of the blade getting embedded in the skin causing a major cut. For a regular use I am finding it difficult and hence stopped using after 3 weeks. May be a quality issue where this product or the batch escaped a check. Or its a design flaw with ergonomics and mechanics tested well before going into mass production.

  13. Consumer’s voice (comprador verificado)

    Nice razor, I like it.

I like the finish and mechanism is smooth. Product description mentions that it’s 4Oz (113.3g) but it’s 2.75Oz (78g)
