Great Old Time Quality
I really like the Parker products I’ve purchased and use. They have a very solid feel to them and in every way look and feel well built. I’ve shaved with everything since I began shaving almost forty years ago … safety razors with DE blades were my first shaving implements, then all the variations of disposables and multi-blade razors out there, about ten years ago I began trying electric razors as well, and recently I’ve begun shaving with a straight edge razor.BOTTOM LINE: The best and most comfortable shave be far for me is a safety razor with a DE blade like this Parker 99R uses. FWIW I prefer Gillette blades these days.WHY: I love shaving with a straight razor … it’s “shaving zen” for me. It’s a ten to twenty minute ritual in the morning like a daily meditation. However, it’s not as easy to get a close shave with a straight razor for me as with this safety razor, or nearly as fast if I want or need to get out of the bathroom and on with my day. My beard is particularly coarse, a bit curly and grows in multiple directions on my neck up to and including the chin area. Shaving both across and against the grain, is a necessity for me if I want a really close shave, and it’s easy and fast with this razor … but a real chore with a straight razor.Now don’t get me wrong … I use my straight razor nine out of ten days at home (I haven’t taken it on trips away from home yet). I love the ritual, but if I want or need a fast, comfortable and close shave this is my go to tool. Sometimes I even use it to clean up after I’ve shaved with a straight razor if I don’t feel like fussing with the particularly challenging areas of my face too.This razor fits my hand really well. It’s balanced so I don’t have to apply any pressure at all to the head and I can let the razor glide and do the work of shaving as it should. There’s enough weight in the razor to allow me to get close just letting it rest against my skin and there’s virtually no drag whatsoever with a good prep before beginning (I use a pre-shave cream by Proraso that I love, and a good shaving cream or soap to create a lather that I apply with a badger brush … I then also re-lather for additional passes, i.e.: across and/or against the grain).I’ve owned other safety razors of quality, e.g.: Merkur, and this one is literally as good as any and better than most. I will buy additional Parker razors to try different sizes and styles, and at least one more Parker 99R for the road as well so I can leave my favorite safety razor safely at home.There is just nothing about this razor that prevents me from giving it five stars and from a value for money point of view it should get another three or four if Amazon allowed them. Don’t’ waste your time with all the indecision and study of everything out there, get this razor, shave with it and I am confident you’ll be thrilled with your purchase.

Great Razor Albeit Some Minor Aesthetic Issues
I decided to purchase the Parker 99R after doing some research on their line; and plus butterfly openers are awesome. Apparently the 99R is the way to go if you want one of Parker’s butterfly operner razors as the others are prone to quality control issues; the blade might not sit right, the opener not functioning properly, and some shoddy work in the finish. Now two of those I could see being a big deal as they could assist you in accidentally slitting your own throat, but I think for an item procuced in India, the last issue could be expected. Now I have nothing wrong with India, but it’s overseas manufacturing, that’s all.TL;DR – This is a great razor but I don’t recommend it too highly for newcomers to the world of DE shaving as the blade angle is more aggressive. If you’re purchasing a razor for the first time, go check out Edwin Jagger; their razors paired with a good blade cut through hair like a lightsaber through Battle Droids yet are very easy to use. Your whiskers and your skin will wish to shake your hand and go have a round of scotch. If you have been shaving with a DE razor for a while, the Parker will make a nice addition to your whisker slaying arsenal; just don’t expect the finish to be absolutely perfect and do expect to see some more aggressiveness in the razor.For those of you still reading, let’s get the ball rolling. The 99R arrived fast and well packaged. Super Safety Razors did a great job here. I have Amazon Prime, granted, so if it wasn’t two day shipping I’d be raising an eyebrow to some degree. Upon first inspection, the razor’s appearance was, for me, an 8.5 out of 10. The chrome finish was for the most part nice and shiny. There was a minor scratch on one of the opening panels, as well as some other little “dust scratches” here and there but you’d have to be searching for them to notice. For me this isn’t a big enough issue to take a star off for as the razor is going to wear over time anyway. If I cared that much I am sure a jewelry store could polish it up. The razor is also pretty hefty, the handle is about four inches long and has some significant weight. It felt like most of this was in the razor head however so it is a bit top-heavy in comparison to my other razor which I adore, the Edwin Jaffer DE89BL; not an issue for me, but it could throw some people off.The butterfly mechanism worked very well. The bottom “dual knob” piece twists to open the razor head to expose the piece that the blade slides on to. The razor head houses the blade snugly and the first time I shaved with it I did not notice the blade being loose or moving around. Some reviewers have had an issue with this so I must have gotten a good one; then again look at the numbers. WAY more five stars than anything less so I think your chances of receiving a good razor are pretty high. I raise my glass to you Parker, well done on the mechanism.What I did notice is that this razor is much more aggressive than the EJ, and my skin felt it. Applying my good old Aqua Velva Ice Blue post-shave stung more than usual. The angle required for this razor is a little more than the EJ I felt, but was quick enough to get used to as I’ve been using my EJ for a number of years. Despite the increased aggressiveness I managed to not cut myself; whether this was lady luck smiling upon me that morning or just skill I do not know, I’ll take it either way. The increased aggressiveness felt like it actually led to a closer shave than the EJ but not by much. It’s a bit of a double edged sword (razor) with the Parker (Pun intended. Come on. Coooomeeee on. You laughed.) It might net a closer shave but I feel I’d have to be much more careful than with the EJ. Each razor has their ups and downs.The 99R is a great razor and I look forward to many a manly shave with it. My EJ still has a special place in my heart as it was my first safety razor and still has comfort factor going for it, but the Parker does yield a great shave with some more care and patience than normal. If you’re in the market for a new safety razor, the Parker 99R is worth the money.Happy shaving gentlemen, stay smooth. Stay classy.

Well, I’m definitely a happy camper. I’ve used a multi-bladed razor for years. A couple years ago I finally switched to a Schick Quattro. But unfortunately, I’ve seen a downward spiral in the ability of these blades to meet my shaving needs. I have an unfortunate combination of sensitive skin and a thick beard. Understand, I’ve been shaving a LONG time. Now in my late 50s, I started shaving in sixth grade!! Within a year of starting to shave I had to switch to a safety razor. So, when I say that my razor blades were not lasting as long as I thought they should, I really do know what I’m talking about. A blade for that Schick Quattro razor would last only two shaves before I had to replace it. Seriously??!! I don’t know about you, but I certainly could not afford to spend $25 for sixteen shaves (about $25 every two weeks!). Ouch! A little bit of math shows that for the same $25 I can purchase enough high quality safety razor blades to last an entire year. Well, with those numbers it is Back to the Future time for me!So, I started to hunt around for a new, old style razor. After all, I realized that my old Gillette double edge, safety razor did a much better job. I started to explore options. I wanted a butterfly opening razor. I have a neurological problem that often makes my hands very clumsy. The butterfly action makes it much easier for me to open and close the razor as well as remove and replace the blade. Further that same neurological issue tends to cause my hands to have a slight tremor. It’s not a lot, but I needed a blade that helped dampen those tremors. One trick to reduce the tremors is to use heavier items (such as eating utensils and, yes, even razors). I have short, broad hands. This razor fits comfortably in my hand. And the heft almost completely eliminates those tremors.Yes, this razor does set an aggressive angle to the blade. Combine it with Feather blades and it is definitely aggressive. But remember my thick beard. Poof! Problem solved. This razor slices through my beard and leaves me with an incredibly smooth face. No more stubble left behind. Just a clean, smooth face.Getting used to a safety razor is not all that hard. It requires a certain amount of patience and calm as you shave. In fact, I find there’s a bit of a “Zen-like” thing with shaving. There’s ritual. Getting the water just right. Washing to clean your face. Wetting the shaving brush. Building up a lather in the shaving soap. Covering one half of my face with lather. Placing the brush so it doesn’t make a mess. Picking up the razor and taking that first stroke. It’s time to be patient and calm and forget the rest of the world. Just focus on that first stroke. And then the next. And the next. Until it’s time to lather the other side of my face. And repeat the process. It’s surprising how something potentially dangerous can be so relaxing.Still, it IS a safety razor. While it might seem dangerous, it’s not really. Yes, you can nick yourself. But a little bit of practice cures that. It only took me a day to remember my shaving skills. And when first learning, it only took me a few days to get the hang of it.Yes. This definitely was a great investment. And my wife loves the smooth face.

Nine months later and zero complaints
It has now been about 9-10 months since I purchased this razor and I still love it. Everything I said before holds. I did nick myself again but this, too, was also my fault because I got in too much of a hurry over a tricky spot. Even at that, it was not a bad nick at all. The razor is smooth, clean, perfect weight, size and proportion. I have no reservations whatsoever in recommending this razor to those who want the experience of a DE and also get away from the gimmickry and expense of the triple and quadruple blades that cost a minor fortune.My selection of razor was based in no small part to generally positive reviews as well as requirements of having a butterfly opening and reasonably heavy weight. I had used DE safety razors years ago and have grown very tired of spending $$$ for other blades that don’t last as long as standard DE blades. So far I love it, but I have only shaved twice with it so far so I will need to come back later to update once I have had more uses and more time has passed.What I will say for now is this:The razor seems to be very well-constructed, with apparently solid butterfly mechanisms and evenly distributed weight. This is important not only for general functionality but also for ease of shaving without having to make major adjustments. In fact, while some reviewers wrote of experiences where they were cut (some badly) by the blade, I found the shave to actually be quite mild. I was even tempted at first to try using a slightly firmer stroke but realized there was no need, as the shave was really that close. That said, as a woman, I would be very hesitant to use this for shaving anything “delicate.”Cons: I did find I had to adjust the blade itself the first time I shaved with this razor but it was an easy adjustment, and no more out of line than what I used to have to do when using safety razors years ago. If I find that alignment is off, I will certainly review that problem as well when I come back for the follow up review.All in all, I am quite all right with this product and looking forward to many good shaves with it.Update roughly one month into use:Pros: Evenly distributed weight, nice grip, light touch needed, mildCons: None that I see as yetI have used this razor numerous times since I purchased it and still zero complaints. I have nicked myself exactly once and even then it was a very minor one and most assuredly due to my failure to maintain proper angle and stroke. All parts work well, nothing getting loose or rusted or anything like that. On top of this, I am NOT a pro at using these things so if I am able to use it with no issues, I’m pretty confident recommending it to others. That said, if one is new to using these types of razors, go slow at first. There is a bit of a learning curve (though not necessarily all that long or difficult).I’ll be back again in about six months or so to update.

Easily the worst razor I have owned-quality control is non-existent
Sending the razor back. Let me first state that I have no problems with vendor Super Safety Razors. They have been responsive through this process and I intend to reorder from them again for this same razor when my refund clears. The one star is for the condition of the razor. When you look at the top two flanges that close when you tighten the butterfly mechanism, one side is aligned perfect; the other side maybe 1/32 off (just guessing) but it is obvious visually and you can feel the difference when you run your fingernail across from one top flange to the other when they are closed. I haven’t tested that with a blade and don’t intend to. What was also immediately concerning was that when I tested the opening and closing mechanism through its entire range it lightly jams. To be clear not every time but it felt a little unusual to me when I first tried it from the box. I am able to apply a little extra pressure even when that happens to force the unit to open and close, but at these prices it should have more of a watch-like feel. I can’t tell if it hasn’t been machined properly which sometimes comes from the machines used in the build process having wear and tear or that there is debris within the handle. I am more than familiar with these mechanisms and I had some really cheap ones over the years that never did anything like this. Granted defects like these happen when you are manufacturing thousands of units, especially the butterfly type and Parker has some leeway for that, but what I find unacceptable is that the razor failed even a visual inspection which should have been caught before leaving the factory. Nonetheless, I still greatly prefer the butterfly type because it’s far easier for me to clean while shaving and to change blades while I like the weight/heft and long handle of this unit. So you get one more chance Parker…well…it’s like this…the second razor sent to me has the same defect as the first although now its misaligned on both ends when closed though not as badly as the first. I try not to be in the bitch and moan category but I do go along with the fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. I’m not going for a third try or go through the hassle of sending this second one back. I’ll see if I can live with it or use one of my other ones until I can get something else. WHAT I don’t understand is that I have had a number of the cheap DE razors over the years in the eight and twelve buck category and they ALL closed and aligned properly. Considering how sharp the blades are that I’m using, it is a bit of a consideration. Despite the PR, this just indicates to me that the company in India has no concept of or cares about quality control. BTW, my Feathers are way better than the Shark’s. I’m glad (though surprised) others are happy with this product. I am not. Edit: had to throw it out. One side of the shaver was (almost) passable but suffered skin damage from the other side. I really liked the length and weight of the razor but it didn’t matter at that point. For those that are peddling this type of aggressive razor as a starter razor, even if it is/was manufactured and operated properly, I would suggest laying off the sheepdip with all due respect. Less aggressive razors should always be the first step until a person becomes more experienced with this type of shave unless you have a really tough beard and skin. I have been using this type of razor for over 40 years so have some vague idea of what I’m talking about. Additional comment…got a Viking Vulcan…perfect with a Feather blade…third time was the charm I guess…much, much better mechanism…

Update: This razor broke after a few months.The poor grip caused this to slip out of my hands and fall to the floor. It didn’t survive the drop. Head snapped clean off. Not very well constructed.Give a good, clean shave, however, coming from the Parker 97R to this is a bit of a surprise. A couple of things to mention.1. It’s definitely a better constructed product than the 97R. Unlike my previous razor, it doesn’t have a plastic ring beneath the head of the razor. The previous plastic part on my Parker 97R must have worn down, which caused that razor to break. I don’t think that will happen with this razor.2. It’s quite a bit more aggressive than the 97R. You have to have a much lighter touch with the 99R. Let the weight of the handle do your shaving. I NEVER got nicks with the 97R, but I had to put in more work to get a close shave. The 99R provides a much faster shave, and a bit closer as well, but you have to be more careful. I got nicks for the first time in a long time with this razor, but once I figured out that I had to have a softer touch, the shave was great.2. I HATE the grip on the handle. It’s a smooth spiral shape, which caused the razor to rotate and almost slip out of my hand. I do NOT like that. The grip needs to be more aggressive like most other razors. The razor should stay firm in your hands. The handle on this is far too slippery.

Parker 99 Razor
I started shaving with one of these when I was a kid… not a good experience for a young guy, cut myself a few times.. And it was about that time that my dad bought a Schick injector.. Later I bought an Atra.. I loved that Atra razor and took such good care of it, and used that very same Atra from the early to mid 70’s until about two years ago when blades started to be hard to find… bought a knock-off Schick on Amazon produced in India, and it used Schick blades which were also hard to find. I used it for two years, then decided to try a doubled edged again.. After careful research, I landed on this Parker 99. What an amazingly good choice… I absolutely love this thing. The nice part is, blades for this bad boy are dirt cheap, plentiful and have been around since the 1920’s and no end in sight… so I boxed up my old stuff and have this.. My advice is, just wash your face well, soap up good with your brush and shave slow and deliberate and there will be no nicks, no razor burn… I took my time because I remembered getting sliced up way back then… A slow approach is best till you get your own technique, actually makes shaving a pleasurable ritual in the morning… It’s a substantial piece, heavy and solid… just let the weight of it work as you glide across your face, it’s a nice thing, glad I bought it. I’m now considering a few more double edged razors like a Parker 98 and an Edwin Jagger just to switch up… but this Parker 99 is a nice change… really close shave, one pass down and two passes up, shaves very close. Once you shave with this razor a few times and find that youre relaxed and get comfortable, then you see how nice and close of a shave you get… Suddenly you come to the realization that for all those many years, those companies pushing the triple and quadruple blade razors, simply sold you a bill of goods and you fell for it.. They created a market by convincing men that their product did a better job than single blade and that more blades in the head were better, remember the line… “the first blade lifts the whisker and the second blade cuts it, before it has time to snap back”… yea right…! In my humble opinion, this single blade shave is much more superior….Try it.. you will be rewarded…UPDATE: Best choice in razors that I have ever made… I have since purchased a Parker 66R and a Parker 82R.. The Parker 82 is in my travel kit, because I’m not too keen on the feel of the twist knob.. and the Parker 66 I have been using recently because the handle is perfect for in the shower shaving. I’ve tried to convince my son just to try one, but he sees a double edge razor as archaic and dangerous. Sadly, they’ve convince him that in order to get the best shave, he needs to change to a new blade every couple of days, and my poor boy, he uses a razor that you almost have to take out a bank loan for the blades.. ha ha ha… young guy’s… he’ll come around one day… Check out these Parkers, I kid you not, these are really good razors, I actually look forward to shaving in the morning nowadays..P.S: I have read some reviews of inconsistencies in the blade head, my advice would be (before you ever use it) to place a blade in the head and close the head and see if the blade is evenly placed one both sides. If not, send it back for a new razor. I have purchased three, all have been perfect right out of the box…. I hope that I have helped you in your purchase.. good luck.

easy to use
I was looking for an upgrade from my Wilkinson Sword Vintage DE safety razor which is also TTO. I find that the Parker 99R has a shorter handle than the Wilkinson razor but makes up for it with the build quality. The blade seats properly on the Parker 99R with both sides exposing the same amount of blade so the shave experience is even on both sides. The heft is good and I really like the convenience of the TTO design for changing blades. I use Astra blades and it is a decent razor to shave with that doesn’t cost the earth.

I prefer a bit of a longer handle, and a bit of weight to the razor and this razor fulfills both of those requirements. I measured the razor at 104 grams / 3.6 oz., with an overall length of 4.25 inches, the handle from the bottom to where it touches the underside of the table (where blade rests) is 4 inches in length.The comb at the safety bar is closed, but grooved – albeit the grooves are very small. The gap for the blade exposure is good and some have said the blade does not protrude out far enough and makes this a mild shaving razor – my direct experience is the opposite, I find this a bit more aggressive than my Edwin Jagger DE89L and was surprised by this. I do find this razor needs to be rinsed out a bit more frequently than my other razors but not so much that I can not get several strokes before having to do so.The twist to open mechanism I found to operate smoothly, access to change blades is easier than a two or three piece razor (I have both), and so far the blade sits straight and even, the doors hold it tight in position. The handle grip is secure and firm, not slippery when wet and soapy, style is very nice.Fit and finish – overall very good, not perfect but nothing so horrendous or very visible except under close inspection. Compared to my experience with a Merkur 39C I would say this Parker is just as good, if not just slightly better in the casting and plating. Compared to my Edwin Jagger DE89L it is a bit less blemish free as the EJ is absolutely perfect on every point and piece. Again, the casting and plating issues are mostly where you do not see them and nothing that would make me return the razor.I have included a lot of photos, some may be of interest in comparison and real life use, or not. I had a three day growth of whiskers waiting for this razor to arrive – NOT recommended – I have a before and after picture, no nicks or cuts, blood free shave. I would rate the shave BBS, but I did have more “burn” irritation than with my other razors – for the moment I will chalk that up to my learning curve with this particular razor as I did have to adjust the angle at which I am used to – this is not a mild shave razor in my opinion as even with a small amount of razor edge exposed, I had to almost use the razor with no angle at all, perpendicular to my face.I would recommend this razor to anyone looking for a long handle and a bit of weight to it, as well as a very good and close shave.

Use zero pressure of the skin, unlike cartridge razor and you get a very close and comfortable shave which will last a whole day without any skin irritation or redness.I highly recommend this razor. It feels substantial in the hand due to its all brass metal construction. I recommend this for anyone starting off or mature shavers looking for a better shave than the substantially more expensive plastic cartridge razors.The DE blades are so cheap that I don’t use a blade for more than 3-4 shaves, which means i am always using a sharp new blade always. Earlier thanks to the high cost of a cartridge razor, I used to keep pushing a blade even when less sharp for more than its life to justify its cost. This used to cause me severe skin issues and irritation and redness.Build quality : All brass heavy chrome finish. Very high quality. It is one of the heaviest DE razor in the market and very popular due to its weight for an effortless, zero pressure shave.Fit and finish : 5 stars – very thick chrome plating on brass razor. Very showy. Very smooth butterfly mechanism. The blade is aligned equally on both sides making the shave quality equal and smooth.Shave quality : very efficient and smooth. With zero pressure gives a very clean baby bottom shave in two passes. Best to use a shaving cream and brush instead of the gel or foam which is not as slick as a shaving cream lathered on face. Shave quality is much better than a cartridge razor.
