Ok, so i felt terrible for impulsively buying this cause the reviews were brutal! Once it arrived, as described, it was solid and gelatinous. I was like howww will i get this on my hair even ???WATER!! You break it apart with your fingers and then add water and BADABING, it’s beautiful. My curls are no longer frizzy, i can look super cute for my zoom date :,) If you don’t mind the two extra steps, I recommend.

Different from Purchasing in the store
I bought a few of these and they were all the same. Totally different from purchasing in the store. It did not have the same consistency. It was clumpy and would not melt in the hand like the ones I have purchased in stores. I recommend not purchasing it here, I don’t know if it is shipping or the temperature they were stored in. But it was awful!

Great for very dry, curly hair
I have kinky, curly hair that loses moisture in seconds. This product is part of my post-shower hair regimen and I use it along with the Jamaican leave in conditioner to really get my curls from frizzing. While it may be too thick for some, given the needs of my hair, it’s perfect. Highly recommend for those with curly hair that’s prone to frizzing and if you’re into the curly girl method, this product is your new bestie.

Gets and stays very crunchy if you use too much, BUT
The first few times I tried this I ended up with very crunchy wet-looking hair that I could not scrunch the crunch out of. Sometimes I’d crunch the hell out of it just to find it had re-crunchified a while later. The fix, I discovered, is to apply it very sparingly, and to wet my hands before picking up a glob of it and rub them together with this product to wet it down before applying to hair, sparingly. Done right, it doesn’t get crunchy and gives me ~5 days of reasonable hold.I have naturally porous 3B curls, I do curly girl per the r/curlyhair wiki, and I apply the following stack of products in order to clean and conditoned hair while still wet:1.) I use this to compliment my styling mousse (design essentials avacado mousse?). The foam alone isn’t enough hold for my wash n go’s or braid/twist outs to last a week. Adding a small amount of this product gives me the lasting hold and definition I need. May curls are shiny and bouncy and light. There’s the slightest crunch after air drying or diffusing, but it easily breaks once I shake out and scrunch my dry curls. Also, no flaking, because it mixes well with my styling foam. (I test that by taking a lil of the products I plan to use together and mixing them on my hand. If they blend into a seamless mixture, it won’t flake. If it separates, it will.)Hair “type”: coily 3b-4a hair that sits a few inches below my shoulders.

You need way less than you think
When they say “use sparingly,” they mean it. I personally got the best results from using a tiny little blotch on my fingertip for half of my hair and rubbing that all over my hands (applied via the ‘prayer hands’ method after towel drying, but before fully drying). If your hair looks greasy (as mine did on the first few attempts), try using less. I didn’t find the “scrunch the crunch” method particularly useful here, as using more than a tiny bit of gel caused my hair to form into thin ropes that never seemed to dry. Your mileage may vary, though. Overall, I’m pretty satisfied now that I’ve figured out how to make it work for me.

New Formula that they didn’t tell you about!
This product is absolutely horrible. I’ve used the Gel Soufflé for years, then suddenly a few months ago I wasn’t able to find it in the stores anymore. I finally decided to just order it, and there’s a good reason why it’s off the shelves. It’s between the texture of jello and ballistic gelatin. It doesn’t dissolve in your hair, it’s clunky if you even try to rub a quarter size amount in your palms just to apply to your hair. I never hated a product from Shea Moisture in life, until I tried the Gel Soufflé. This is not the Soufflé of the past, the company was sneaky and changed the formula. The first 4 formulas are cheap fillers: Glycerin (Vegtable); Water; Corn Syrup; Pectin.I am not at all pleased. I tried to like it, but my hair said otherwise. The Soufflé left a strange film on the top of hair. I have very curly thick hair, and I live in the dry climate of North East Colorado. The previous Soufflé was great in helping my hair retain moisture. The new Soufflé is the complete opposite. I’m beyond disappointed.

It feels more like a thick, wiggly jelly or glaze.Performance & “The Secret” to Using It I cannot stress this enough: A little goes a long way. If you scoop a handful of this like a normal cream, your hair will feel sticky and heavy. However, if you use it correctly, it is a miracle worker.My Method: I apply this to soaking wet hair. I dip just two fingers in to get a dime-sized amount, rub it between my palms to warm it up (it melts into an oil-like consistency), and then glaze it over my curls.The Results: The definition is unmatched. It clumps my curls together beautifully and completely eliminates frizz. Unlike hard hold gels that leave a “crunchy” cast, this leaves my hair feeling soft and looking incredibly shiny once it dries.Moisture Factor Because Agave Nectar and Coconut Oil are high on the ingredient list, this feels very nourishing. My curls look hydrated for days, not just on wash day. It seals moisture in really well, which is great for high-porosity hair.Verdict If you have thick, curly, or coily hair that craves moisture and definition, this is a 5-star product. Just remember the golden rule: use half as much as you think you need! The 12oz jar is huge and will likely last me months because of how little I need to use.
