Permanent Sticky, Waxy Residue
When I first got this bar, I loved the smell and the packaging. I really wanted to like this product, as it would be a cheaper alternative to the other natural stuff I get. The first time I washed my hair with it, I spent about an hour in the shower because I thought my hair was so greasy I kept needing more product. Turns out, the bar just leaves some sort of coating all over each hair that’s completely impossible to wash out, unless maybe you have a different soap. Ironic. The residue looks like grease, leaving me with permanantly greasy looking hair, and it makes it take over an hour to brush out my thin, curly hair without ripping all of my hair out of my scalp (especially because the hair being sticky makes it catch and pull all hairs around it into tighter knots), and it then leaves a thin, white, sticky residue all over my brush. The only way I can think that this product is being shipped and sold is it must not have that effect on everyone, but I did see some had the same problem as me.A small plus is it does exacerbate my dandruff much less than commercial shampoos with sulfites, and my hair’s certainly not going to be drying out anytime soon with it’s waxy shield. I’m sorry, but neither these nor the smell can pull it up to a 2, though, a shampoo that does the opposite of cleaning is irredeemable.A small disclaimer, I did only try it a couple of weeks before writing this, but I used other natural products before so I think there is no reason I would have a “transition” period.

My first shampoo bar. Took time but I’m loving it!
This is my first time using a shampoo bar. My hair is naturally curly-wavy and goes down to my mid-back. I read many of the reviews before purchasing this bar. I, like, many others here purchased this for the purpose of travelling with less liquids but have also been in the process of reducing my plastic waste, etc. So, this was a win-win for me. For starters, I cut the bar in half in an effort to make it last longer and to have a smaller bar to travel with. After reading one of the reviews, which suggested lathering up on my hands and then washing my hair with that, I decided that’s what I was going to try. It took a bit of practice. The first time, I wasn’t truly convinced that my hair was clean. The second time, was better but still not convinced. By the third time, I had the process set for me. I would lather on my hands and wash my scalp. After my scalp is lathered (this is definitely not a bottle shampoo lather, more silk-like as many have said), I proceed to one or two light swipes of the bar down the rest of my hair. From there, I scrub it all together starting at my scalp and include the length of my hair. Once it’s all scrubbed, I will rinse. Note, that I haven’t stopped using my regular conditioner yet. Have been using a special conditioner because of hair loss and figured I would do one step at a time. Having used the bar for about two weeks now, I can say that I am quite happy with it. My hair has taken on a more natural shine and looks healthy to me. I’m not sure if the process I used eliminated that waxy residue many people are talking about. All I can say is that I am very, very happy with this bar and will continue to use it as I have been.UPDATE 6/26/2018: It’s been over two months now that I have been using this shampoo bar, and I’m still in love with it. I have used no other shampoo of any type but this one since April. My hair feels and looks great! Curly hair tends to frizz but mine isn’t frizzy anymore. The ends feel much healthier than they did before. That’s usually the most difficult area to care for on a curly head, the ends. It doesn’t feel like hay anymore (this was always an issue). I did stop using the bottle shampoo shortly after I started using this bar and switched to a conditioner bar from another company and it has been working very well for me. I’m a happy customer who is more than willing to recommend this product to anyone.

… to give this one a try because it had pretty decent reviews
SO I’ve tried numerous shampoo bars at this point and decided to give this one a try because it had pretty decent reviews. I am really surprised after using the product. Let me start by saying this bar smells fantastic! I got it in the mail and my entire kitchen was filled with the scent of this bar, it was great. The size of the bar is substaintle in comparison to many others too. However, on first use I knew it wasn’t love. First it didn’t seem to lather as well as some other brands I have used. So it took a lot of effort to get a good bubble going. I had noticed the insert with the bar talked about a transition period which I thought was a little weird because I hadn’t experienced it with any other brand. My hair was SOOOOO dry and icky feeling. I hated it. But I stuck with it. I used this bar for a couple weeks before I finally threw it away and went back to a different brand. The last straw was when I realized the amount of build up on my scalp. I was finding that I could scratch my head and get soap build up under my fingernail. NO THANK YOU.

Sounded good but…
This is a great concept in natural hair care. I’m striving to use less chemicals/toxins in our personal care products. I have long, fine wavy color treated hair with a long history of using salon quality products. I’ve always enjoyed experimenting with those highly recommended. From reviews on this product, and in my efforts to go more natural, this was definitely worth a try and had high hopes. I was excited to receive my new shampoo bar and followed the instructions/tips. It smells fantastic!!! Of note, I used this in combination with an all natural conditioning bar ordered at the same time. So, I can’t say it was necessarily the shampoo bar itself, but my hair felt so ‘squeaky clean’ after washing it (before conditioning), I believe the shampoo bar contributed to my overall outcome. My hair felt weighted and thick (not in a good way), as if coated with wax and without any smooth or silky feel running my fingers through my hair. It also felt dry, especially the last 3-4 inches or so. I believed I had rinsed both shampoo and conditioning bar products thoroughly by the way. But even while still in the shower afterward, my wet hair felt oddly dry and heavy is the best way I can describe it. It took much longer to blow dry, again noting a lack of a silky/smooth pull-through, was a real challenge to blow out (i.e. pull the brush through my hair, noting I strive to be gentle…my hair is already fine and I don’t want any more of it landing in the brush than necessary!!). To offset that effect, I used a good spray in conditioner/detangler while my hair was still damp. That helped some, but afterward my hair still felt thick and dry, as if coated with wax (almost like oil but not quite) or some heavy product. I figured perhaps I hadn’t rinsed well enough after all or needed more experience using these new products. The next day, I washed and conditioned my hair with my normal salon products, anticipating restored manageability of my hair, but had similar results ….as if I either still hadn’t removed all traces of the prior shampoo/condition or possibly had damaged my hair. It took two more washings (a few days apart) for my hair to start feeling normal again. It was an $22 experiment (goodness knows I’ve spent more on a product) and don’t plan to use this on my hair again, but perhaps recycle it as a body soap. I’ve tried a lot of great hair products over the years, some of them natural or from health/whole food stores. This sounded promising but didn’t work for me.

Waxy build-up
This shampoo bar smells amazing. But that’s the only good thing. I rarely leave reviews but I have to, just for this product. It’s my first time switching to a shampoo bar, and boy oh boy, was I in for a surprise. This takes some work to lather, so I used a foaming net. Problem solved. After working it through your scalp, you’re pretty much done cuz the rest of your hair gets matted together ( I have hair down to my boobs). I tried combing my hair before showers, didn’t work- the main body of hair remains one big tangled mess.Combing through hair is another issue, brush gets stuck after the crown, and hair gets pulled out. I was able to bun my hair up properly for the first time in my life but that’s only because it has never been so greasy and waxy.It is fascinating to watch the soap wax build up on my brush- at first I thought it was ‘residue’ from all the other hair care products I was using previously. Nope. Just soap build-up.I used this bar all the way to the very end, took me a month. Thought I’d get thru the ‘transition’ phase they mentioned. I definitely didn’t. Just used JR Ligett’s soap for the first time tonight- hair is back to normal, and even softer than before.

Works great, first time bar user.
I moved from conventional shampoo with dry scalp treatment to this product in an effort to help reduce plastic usage and carbon emissions. I think this shampoo bar is great. Yes, it takes a few days or a couple of weeks to get used to not having the hair stripped of everything. After a couple of weeks, I have not experienced any of the wax that some others have mentioned nor a greasy feel to my hair. My hair definitely feels different, but not waxy or greasy. I have been able to discontinue the dry scalp shampoo so far but will keep what is left around in case I need, for example, a once per week treatment or something like that. Thus far I do not. I love the scent, the bar lathers really well very quickly which, due to the thickness, will make it last for a decent amount of time. I have a different soap I use for shaving but this could certainly be used for that. I’m happy with this product and will likely continue to use it.UPDATE: After almost a month of usage I am able to wash hair every other day (I shower at least daily) and much less of my hair is falling out. Much less. This bar seems like it will last for months.

Used for years, spent $80 on this shampoo. Here is my analysis.
Update as of 2023:One thing I have figured out the longer I have lived with hard water and trying natural products for your hair is, at least for me, it is important to rotate through different products to help avoid buildup. I have found this to be true of any product that does not have a lot of nasty chemicals. The first few washes are the best, and I don’t think the soap is to blame for this because the hard water is constantly fighting you. Breaking it up helps. If you can use soft water, such as distilled or rain water, this soap, like many other natural soaps, become much more effective. Lacking that, product rotation, acid rinses, periodic clarifying treatments and thorough manual drying with an old cotton T-shirt will have to be your best friend when using this product. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but something to be aware of.Having said all this, I recommend this soap and bumped it up from 3 stars to 4, because while it can be disappointing not to replace your basic chemical foam shampoo and turn to this as an alternative in hard water using the same approach, it is a quality product and it is ultimately a very good shampoo bar. There may be others that have more cleaning power due to the toxic chemicals they contain, but it isn’t worth it in my book. The crunchy path is not always the easy one.[Initial review]I was looking for a more natural shampoo because all the liquids usually have horrible ingredients. I heard bar shampoo is best to avoid all chemicals. I started purchasing this soap back in 2019 and have used it exclusively as my shampoo since May 2021, besides venturing out a couple of times to experiment with something new. So I feel like I come from a good place to give a comprehensive review. My hair type: Fine, very long, prone to breakage and dryness at the ends, prone to grease at the back of the neck, forehead and above the earsFirst, the pro’s:- It’s made with very high quality ingredients. For those of you who don’t want the toxic chemicals, this is a great bonus.- It is not harsh, and does not strip the hair totally (but more on this in the con’s)- I have tried all of the different scents and like them all. My personal favorite is the Grapefruit. The scent stays with you after showering- Comes in a cardboard box with paper label rather than plasticNow for the con’s:- This soap does not leave my hair shiny most of the time. Out of the 100’s of times I’ve used it, maybe only a few have left my hair shiny looking. It cleans better at the beginning, but the more you use the bar, the worse it cleans.- Unless your hair is 99% clean already, one round of shampooing, even with intense finger massaging, does not leave my hair clean, necessitating a double shampoo. So I have to do a 5 min scalp massage, thoroughly rinse, then do it again, thoroughly rinse, then do a conditioner rinse. The process leaves my hands tired and the water bill considerably higher.- It is easy to leave a residue unless you rinse it a ton with both water and a proper conditioner. [Edit: I think this stems from the hard water.]- Because it is so gentle, it doesn’t cut grease well. In fact, it seems to leave a greasy film. [Edit: Again, depends heavily on water.]- Unless I do an apple cider vinegar rinse, this shampoo leaves my hair filmy and separated. This may be due to my hard water [Edit: I think I was starting to get it!]- Even with the apple cider vinegar rinse, I still have a sticky grey buildup in my hair between showers with this soap. I have not figured out how to eliminate the grey buildup. Without the apple cider it is a million times worse. [Edit: Same as above comments.]Note that on these cons, maybe I’m not doing it right after all these years. If so I would love to hear feedback on what to change. But these have been my results with my experience using this soap. There are different factors like how hard your water is, your hair type, etc. But I’m a pretty persistent person and really wanted to make it work so I stuck with it for years because I couldn’t find a better alternative. Until….I tried another kind of soap just last night that made me decide to write this review. It is something called PINE TAR SOAP. Let me tell you, my hair has not looked this shiny in YEARS. It’s all natural, if you get a good brand, and the price is way better. If you don’t mind your hair smelling like a campfire (which is a smell that makes me happy) I encourage you to check it out. My mission right now is to see if I can alter the smell with essential oils after I use the soap.[Edit: if you can rotate this product with pine tar soap or other natural soaps, I think much better success will result. Even the pine tar soap starts to cause buildup in my experience; just about any natural soap seems to do the same except soap nut based soaps, which have their pros and cons. It is also useful to clarify every so often with a baking soda wash.]This soap is good for other purposes. It makes a great soap for washing all the other parts of your body, except your hair. It can also be used to clean minor stains out of clothing, etc.[Edit: I no longer use soaps to wash anything but the underarms. I learned the hard way the skin’s biome is too delicate for regular soapy water washing. This is a massive review, but seeing it’s the first one that comes up, I want to be totally upfront about my experience and maybe help someone else considering trying this so they can not fail as many times as I did!]

Highly recommend! Clean, healthy feeling hair!
I love this bar shampoo. It lathers nicely and smells great. Aromatherapy and clean hair in one step! My hair feels great and stays clean feeling longer. We are a few weeks in using it and the bar still seems close to the original size. Happy that it works well and will last a long time.

And excellent shampoo bar!
The packaging smells wonderful and strong because it is wrapped in cardboard, but the shampoo bar has a VERY mild scent. It does not lather excessively and rinses out easily.I will definitely buy this product again!
