    Good for beginners.

To begin with, I have some criticisms of this product.First of all; the brush. The brush is cheaply made. Saying that, though, does not make me a snob as some other reviewers might suggest. The truth is that it frays easily and the hairs start falling out of the handle after only a few uses. Don’t expect the brush to last more than a month or so, even if you take care of it properly and store it upside down. Also, this brush is made from Boar hair, rather than Badger hair. Boar hair is more scratchy and prickly on the face, and doesn’t hold water as well as Badger hair.Secondly, the soap. The soap is not bad, it makes for a smooth shave and has a nice, very subtle scent to it. The only negative I have to say about it is that it would be better if the kit came with a glycerin soap. Van Der Hagen does make a glycerin soap, but apparently not as part of a kit.The bowl is fine, it has a nice weight and I really have nothing bad to say about it.Despite my criticisms this product is still great for guys who are new to the wet shaving technique and want to try it without spending too much money. Even with the somewhat mediocre brush, this will still give you a closer and smoother shave than normal shaving cream. If you use a safety razor as well it’s even better. Try this kit and if you like it after a few weeks upgrade to a real badger brush, there are some available on here for less than $20.Wet shaving isn’t for everyone though, so if you try it and decide to go back to shaving cream you haven’t wasted much money. At a price this low there is really no reason to hesitate to try it.

Might be better off buying items seperately

This shaving set is obviously designed for first time wet shavers to get their feet wet (bad pun intended) at a cheap price. Being a first timer, I fell to the appeal of it as well. Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s not bad at all. It gives you a nice little bowl, a bar of soap, and a boar’s hair brush all for the cheap price of ten bucks. It’s a great idea to have all these items packaged together so first-timers don’t get overwhelmed at having to purchase everything separately. But if you just take a step back, you might see that it’s no big deal to get these three items separately, and in fact it might be in your own benefit to do so. On the other hand, you might enjoy the learning experience you get from this package. I’ll share my critiques of each item and what I learned.1) the bowl: It’s a great bowl, but I find it a little small and sometimes lather can start foaming out of it during your mixing, no biggy. The thing I like most about this bowl is that it has a nice contrasting color to shave cream. I actually found it hard to keep track of all my created lather when I tried making it in a white bowl, but I have no trouble at all with this bowl.2) the boar’s hair brush: Ohhh, you’ll hear the “pros” always hating on boar’s hair brushes and saying badger hair brushes are better. I actually completely agree with them; I find a badger hair brush to be much better suited to creating and applying lather. However, I still had a lot of fun comparing the two in my shaves and learning for myself the actual differences between them. It’s not like a boar’s hair brush is useless, you can definitely still make lather with it. But if you’re a no-nonsense kind of guy and don’t want to experiment, I strongly urge you to not buy this set. You will definitely replace this brush with a badger hair brush and you’ll feel like you wasted your money.3) the soap: It’s fine. You can purchase it on its own for like 2 bucks on amazon. A good idea is to remove the puck, place it in the bowl, and then microwave in spurts of ten seconds until it melts. Now let it reharden and it will be formed to the bottom of the bowl making lather creation easier (microwave melting works fine with this type of soap, but it doesnt work for certain other types so be careful). If you’re like most people, you’ll find that lather making from a soap takes more time and is harder than creating lather from a shaving cream. If you don’t want to deal with the hardships of turning soap into lather but you still want to wet-shave, you’re probably better off buying a cream. I find it a fun skill to practice and master so I’m happy with the soap. Conclusion: For someone who literally wants to get it right the first time with cheap but quality products, I couldn’t recommend this set. You really are better off getting the cheap tweezerman $10 badger hair brush, getting a cheap bowl/mug from wherever, and just buying this soap separately. However, for someone who is interested in learning and doesn’t mind trying out a boar’s hair first, then I whole-heartedly recommend this set. I don’t see boar’s hair brushes sold individually on amazon, and they’re like 10 bucks at stores, so this set really is a great deal. In addition to it, I still recommend you buy the tweezerman badger hair brush. You’ll have a much better understanding of the comparison between a badger hair and a boar hair brush if you try both out for yourself, and at twenty bucks (10 for this set and 10 for the additional badger hair brush) it’s a great affordable way to get into the world of wet shaving.

Not a bad set at all

The soap: Pretty good at doing what it’s supposed to do- protect the face while shaving. In that respect it works very well. It smells ok. Not great but ok. Most shaving soap scents fade quick anyways or are covered up by aftershave or cologne so who cares? There are other soaps in the $5 to $10 dollar range that are a little easier to lather but not so as to make a huge difference. The other fancy name brand soaps might smell better or lather a little easier but this is just the quintessential, bottom line, does-what-its-supposed-to-do soap. The brush: Don’t let the fact that it’s made of boar bristle fool you. Badger costs more but most experienced wet shavers agree that boar bristle is the preferred brush for shaving soaps. If you use shaving cream, well, that’s another story I’d guess but boar and hard milled soaps go hand in hand. However, this particular brush isn’t the best boar brush there is. The major set back for this brush is that it sheds. I know that most boar brushes do, even the high quality ones will shed a little the first few shaves but this one sheds four or five hairs each shave (yes, I dry it upside down when I’m done). It doesn’t affect my shave but it’s just annoying.Overall: Not a bad kit at all don’t get me wrong. I can recommend it with a clean conscience. Shaving snobs will scoff but this kit does the job, no more no less. If you wanna indulge and submerse yourself in a daily chore like shaving then I guess the sky’s the limit. Shaver’s Den ( I know there’s controversy surrounding them) or Mama Bear will sell a great soap for $5 to $10 bucks and an Omega brush can cost as little as $9 bucks. Will your shave be THAT much better? Naw. Will the EXPERIENCE of shaving be better? Sure, I guess. You decide what’s most important. Ultimately it’s just shaving, right?

    Surprisingly good value!

My boyfriends’ thoughts on this product:I am very new to brush shaving. I started shaving my head years ago since it helped a skin condition on my scalp. I’ve always been looking for the smoothest shave with the least amount of irritation. I’ve tried various shaving creams in a can as well as olive oil and natural soaps. I thought they mostly worked well but that since I was shaving my scalp, it was only normal that it would be more irritating. It would sometimes sting pretty good when rinsing due to nicks and/or cuts. I did not look forward to shaving at all.Recently, I decided to research on some of the forums and one topic that kept coming up for a better shave is the use of a shaving brush. I always thought brushes were more of a gimmick from a bygone era and that the creams in a can were, well, more advanced given their popularity. Based on what I read, I decided that the VDH set was worth trying out. I could not be happier with the results. It took only a couple of tries to learn how to whip up a good lather. I tried it in the shower, and I have never had a smoother, easier shave. I actually look forward to shaving! The brush lathers up well and massages it nicely over the whiskers. The bowl is a perfect size and has good weight to it. I was also pleasantly surprised by the shave soap, so much so that I went to the VDH website to see what other types they carry. I plan to try their unscented luxury and glycerin shave soaps.I know that this set is considered entry level set but I am extremely happy with it. It amazes me that most shave creams found in stores are of the canned variety when something so much better exists. The only thing I am slightly concerned about is that the brush is losing a few hairs here and there even though I am very gentle with it. Apparently some loss is normal as part of the break in process. I am very glad to be introduced to this more traditional road to a much better shave. Thanks VDH!

Great value and product for beginning double edge shavers.

Recently I made the decision to try double edge shaving because the cost of the Gillette Fusion blades I have been using is outrageous. Not knowing if I would like using a double edge razor I did not want to spend a lot of money initially to get into it. After looking at many of the items related to double edge shaving offered on Amazon I decided on this set for several reasons. First, price…for less than $10 I got three of the five items needed to get started. Second, the reviews. Most of them were 4-5 star which is usually a good sign. Third, I did some research on Van Der Hagan and again for the most part read positive reviews of their products.I have been using this set along with a Lord L6 razor and several different brands of razor blades for over a month and am extremely happy with my purchase. The brush is boars hair and does a good job of creating lather from the shaving soap. The shaving soap bowl has a good finish on it and cleans up very easily. I have sensitive skin and the shaving soap that came with this is their deluxe hypo allergenic soap which is nice for me.I do not have anything to compare against as this is my first foray into using a brush, bowl and soap but based on actual results I am happy. At some point I may buy a badger hair brush and different soap but for now this suits my needs.I recommend this set to anyone just getting into double edge shaving.Additional Suggestions: I purchased an 8 ounce bottle of Glycerin from Wal Mart for around $4 and a can of Barbasol Arctic Chill with Menthol. I let water sit on top of the soap to soften it up a little while I am soaking the boars brush in hot water. I then dump the excess water off the top of the soap and add 5-6 drops of glycerin (which helps in moisturizing my face) and then whip up the lather with the boars brush after shaking out excess water. I do this every day. Just to change things up so they do not get boring, once a week I add a squirt of the Barbasol arctic chill after I have worked up the lather with the shaving soap so I get the cooling feeling and smell of the menthol.

    Nice light smell

Brush is rough and preparation with conditioner on receipt, plus 6 uses now, and is just starting to break in a little. The soap and brush combo is difficult to get a slick, and protective lather. Reloading is required between passes. I don’t know how the soap would do with a different brush. Nice light smell.

Gateway kit to the expansive wet shave universe.

This gets a 5-star rating for its contents and overall value. This is a great kit for getting introduced to the world of wet shaving. For less than ten dollars you have basically everything you need, short of the razor, to begin enjoying shaving again instead of treating it like a chore. If you’re on the fence about wet shaving, start with this. It hooked me, and I’m sure it’ll hook you as well. I’m active duty military, so shaving is a daily requirement. Wet shaving has taken that requirement from a daunting chore each morning to something I truly look forward to each day. Let this be your gateway into that expansive universe and slowly upgrade items along the way once you love it as much as I do.The soap lathers great and will last a long time, easily 4-6 months of everyday use. I don’t know if it lists a particular scent, but it smells a lot like a more mild version of the Col Conk Bay Rum scent. The bowl is very cool, sized to fit the soap nicely and allows you to build up a great lather with the included brush. I love the colors, and they really pop out.The brush is far from the best available, but what do you expect at this price point? It does an admirable job, but there is a short break in period in which you’ll likely find a stray boar hair or two on your face. Personally, I like to use it as a travel brush because it works well but doesn’t cost so much that I would be very upset if something were to happen to it or it became lost.

    perfect package

Over 5 years ago I pretty much stopped using shaving cream out of aerosol containers mainly due to airport security. First I would travel with a travel size can, then I discovered it is a lot easier to travel with a bar of soap and a brush. One bar of soap is good for weeks, so it can be cheaper than a can. Actually it can be a lot cheaper than a can if you go with Van Der Hagen. Now the best part: using a brush, it turned out, is much better to loosen the air on my face, and I get a much better and quicker shave. So I started using the shaving brush at home and on the road, all the time. Initially I went with the reviews and I purchased the expensive Badger hair soft brush. I have 3 badger hair brushes and they are expensive and they feel nice. The have a heavy chrome handle, or wood and they are dense. The brush that comes with this kit has a cheap plastic handle and boar bristles. The bristles are not as soft, but in my opinion they are far more effective for me, personally I find myself not using by badger brushes any more. This brush is not just very good, it is excellent. It does not look as good, it does not feel as soft, it is light when you pick it up, and it does not look expensive. But it works better than the ones I tried, from the shaving store or the top rated badger hair brushes from AmazonThe soap is very good, very good lather, thick..quick and nice. Disclaimer: I have a water softer. I like the smell of expensive soaps..honestly, the only difference (as far as I can tell) between expensive 14-20 dollar soap and this is the smell. I cant tell if there is luxurious feeling or not, they all feel good to me and they feel about the same. The expensive ones are usually better smelling, they have shea butter or what not.. but this one feel about the same with little or no smell, which is fine. I do have Bond tubs when I want a nice smell, I really like their sandalwood scentI read reviewers calling it a starter kit, or it is good enough, I fully disagree. I think this is as good as it gets! this is the perfect package: price, quality, performance.

This is a great shave set

This is a great shave set. The bowl looks great and it’s thick. The brush works up a great lather and so far is holding its hair. The soap is ok but prefer Williams.

    Paquete todo en uno

El jabón es muy bueno, fácil de espumar y amable con la piel, el bowl es de tamaño adecuado (y se puede usar en el microondas para calentar agua), la brocha cumple su función; pero el precio es inmejorable

A nice set for your shave

Started out wet shaving in 2015 with this setup. Looks great.Van Der Haven really improved the brush, no shedding at all. I lather this brush & let it dry overnite before first use to soften the bristles. Repeat this 4 or 5 times.Love the bowl, nice small size that fits in your palm. Still like Van Der Hagen luxury soap better, and their un-scented soap. Soap smells good. It could lather better though.
