Great razor for someone switching over from cartridge razor.

I’ve been using cartridge razors since I started shaving as a teen. This is my first DE safety razor purchase and I couldn’t be happier. I did take the time to do some research before hand as I wanted to make sure I was making a good choice. One of my issues is my skin is rather sensitive and I have had been searching for a way to shave that wouldn’t leave my skin feeling I just took sand paper to it. Which has been a problem with cartridge razors.I figured my best bet was getting an adjustable razor coming out of the gate as I wanted to be able to adjust just how aggressive of a cut I wanted. I also wanted a razor with some heft to it. I stumbled upon Vikings Blade and figured The Emperor Series would meet my needs. I also purchased another manufacturer’s safety razor as an alternative. Here is what I can say about the Meiji. The Razor has a real heft to it. The build quality and quality of finish are very good. The butterfly opens and closes without any binding and works well mechanically. Blades fit well into the butterfly without issues. Once closed the blade does bend to conform to the shape of the butterfly. But this is as expected considering the design. Several other reviewers think this is a problem. Frankly it isn’t.The resulting shave of the Meiji was nothing short of spectacular. I got a smooth shave without any irritation or problems after shaving. It only took me 40 years to figure out that shaving with a safety razor, though old school was/is far superior to shaving with “shaving foam” and a cartridge razor. Conclusion, the Meiji is a great razor especially if you’re making your first DE safety razor purchase. And it is far, far superior (and painless I might add) in comparison to any cartridge razor. It is also better than other razor I purchased as an alternative.

    Smooth and luxuriant shave

This is an extraordinary razor, give it a try, you will not be disappointed.I purchased this from Amazon.com.au after much hesitation caused by some very negative reviews here. I encountered none of the issues they complained of, and am so glad I took the chance. It seems to me, one has only to read the instructions (clearly printed on the beautiful presentation box), and none of the alleged problems arise. This is dual head DE razor with a butterfly closure and adjustable aggression settings (1-10). Form and finishing are superb (as is the exquisite packaging) – it is delight to look at and to hold. Although considerably shorter than my Merkur Future razor, the weight of the Meiji has real heft and presence.Build quality is also superb- if, as I do, you like the aesthetic, it is practically a piece of shaving art.I paired this with a Derby extra blade, and Mitchell’s wool fat soap. This was a delight to use right out of the box. The perfect angle was easy to find, control was very certain with the heavily knurled handle. The result was a BBS shave in two passes. No slips, no cuts, easy glide and it cuts so very smoothly. The design and dual heads (i.e. closed flat bar on one side and open comb on the other) meant I was able to crank up the aggression setting to 5. By comparison, I never take my Merkur past 2.This is a razor that is likely to let you find your own sweet spot, whether a beginner or experienced DE user, would make a very fine gift, and is probably the equal of far more expensive alternatives. My Merkur may remain my everyday go to, but this was a treat to use. Very highly recommended.

    Pleased so far

I primarily wanted a razor to do light shaving of my face and mostly my head since all the cartridge razors are a bit too aggressive and I had wanted hopefully an “in between” shave. This is the first time I’ve been able to do my head without nicks and cuts. I used the straight side with the lowest setting. The setting seems to affect its ability to open as wide as it can so it will open the most at the max setting. I didn’t notice any looseness in the adjustment dial or the dial for the doors. It’s heavy enough it feels like you can hurt someone with it and I love the heft and thickness and the slight length on the handle compared to the other razor that I have. I didn’t do anything fancy, just a bit of conditioner and shaving cream on my head like I would do for any other kind of razor and have the slightest itch but no nicks at all or discomfort. My point of reference is using a safety razor a handful of times and have a short Van Der Hagen one which is light, thin, and even shorter than this. Not really the biggest fan plus chrome can be slick and its handle knobbing being too smooth made me look for something in the style of this one.The etched knurling on this handle feels great to me. I feel like I could get a good grip on it short of my hands being doused in oil. I coupled this with a Wilkinson sword blade for the first run as I am still getting a good feel for blades but if this holds up this has to be a good one. I also really really like the short length even as someone with relatively large hands it never felt like it was going to get away from me or that I would drop it even in awkward positions. It also did not get clogged up with hair or cream as bad as my other. If this holds up it is a fantastic piece. I also love the coloring and overall style of it, everything about it says quality in my eyes so far. I just wanted something that I could get a comfortable shave since sometimes even good razors can be very problematic on my skin and I don’t need to go Krillin smooth but didn’t want the typical electric stubble either and this seems to fit the bill perfectly. This one would be great for beginners but the price is the ONLY thing I think would be prohibitive but the flexibility of the adjustment is fantastic for beginners and as you get more confident or want to shave different parts differently it’s a great pick so far.Edit: Astra’s definitely still very much bite on the minimum setting if you aren’t careful lol.

    Good Razor

If you are wanting something in the realm of a Gillette Fatboy style adjustable razor but don’t want to pay $80 to $100 for a vintage razor that’s in good shape (finding a vintage Fatboy that is in great working condition is a hard thing to do for under $100 these days)? This might be an option for you. Build quality is great. Feel in the hand is amazing. Aesthetics of the razor are amazing as well. It is definitely a looker. The beveled corners that everyone thinks is a defect are actually part of the design and for me do not impact shave quality in a negative way. I only gave the razor 3 stars due to a couple major weaknesses I found on it. 1. The adjustable knob on the handle of the razor tends to still move even when you lock the butterfly mechanism down tightly. This causes the razor to get bumped up or down when I’m shaving. Like sometimes it goes from 3 to 9 without me knowing. It’s a poor design. Pretty sure it’s my grip that causes this but considering that a lot of us grip the razor towards the head in certain situations? I see this as an engineering flaw. The click of the old Gillette style adjustable razors is a much more secure design IMO. 2. The second flaw of the razor is it’s butterfly doors. Although they seem to be working just fine? The doors don’t open up quite as much as they could. This causes two issues. 1. It’s harder to get a razor blade to just drop in. There’s a bit of finagling that tends to happen just to get it seated in the razor. Not a deal breaker but still could use a bit more room to easily drop the blade in (ease of blade changes is the main reason I went with the butterfly design). The other issue is even more of a minor one. It’s a bit harder to get in there and clean when the doors don’t open as far as they could. All that being said? Again, if you are looking for an adjustable, butterfly style razor? This is a decent modern option that won’t break the bank. Plus it’s new. So if it has problems, it’s covered by the manufacturer. When ordering a vintage one you never know what your are getting till it’s in your hands. Overall I recommend this razor. It’s a really good option for the money. That being said? I returned this and am getting a vintage Gillette. Hands down a better razor.

Nice looking razor and shave nice!

I’m at a toss up between 3 or 4 stars, I did give it 4 for the nice shave I got but it should be closer to 3 because of the flaws in the razor. This razor is based on a design of the Gillette adjustable razor called the Fatboy. There are a couple flaws in the razor, one is a design flaw. The design flaw is that when loading a blade you need to have it set at max, the doors for some reason are not as far open when set on 1 otherwise the blade doesn’t fit through the doors, neither my Fatboy or my Gillette Slim does this, the doors remain the same distance open no matter the setting. There is no instructions about this in the box about this either, had there been instructions I maybe would refer a design flaw. The second flaw is when loading a blade any other twist-to-open or butterfly razor you set the blade in the razor and close the doors. Well, not this razor, the blades I use when set in the razor needs to be pushed down over the center bar and then you need to be extra careful when closing that the blade doesn’t pop up and jam itself into the inside of the door, if that happens you may as well toss the blade because the cutting edge is likely dulled by this. There is one other issue but at least this is covered in the included card and that is the baseplate could end up lopsided and giving it an uneven blade exposure from right right to left, at least it explains how to fix this issue. As for the shave, I have only used it once and have gotten a nice shave from it. It is a touch heavier than my Gillette Fatboy and close to the same dimensions. My main razor is a vintage Gillette Slim adjustable, it compare to it or the Fatboy this is much more aggressive on lower settings. I normally run either of my Gillette adjustable razors at around 7(they go to 9), first this first shave I set it on 2 and it was as aggressive as those Gillette razors on 7. I am going to try setting 3 for my next shave but not sure how much more aggressive I dare go. All in all it a good razor with a couple minor flaws.Edit: have had 3 more shaves and the last two were on 4 days growth and 3 days growth on setting #5. Usually at more than 3 days growth my Gillette Slim even on setting 6 or 7 struggle with removal of my tough whiskers. I had no problem with the 4 day beard set on #5 and it seemed like it cut through more smoothly than any of my other DE razors. It would have a hard time competing with my old Schick Injector though. I would now give it a solid 4 stars but still can’t give it 5 because of the quirks of loading the blade.

    Very expensive for Europe.

There’s better gear out there for this price.

Very cool Razor – great for beginners/new to safety razors

This is a great entry-level razor, especially at the sub-$50 price point. Like most razors at this level, this one does a fine job and is made nicely. But, you MUST open it up and remove the blade after use so it can dry out. Many of these razors can rust out – even if they are anodized or coated like this one. Most people reading this are already into safety razors, so I’ll try to describe this in relation to other products. It looks cool and I like the pseudo-Japanese design queues. The handle is textured and easy to grip – I never have to worry about dropping it in the shower. It’s a butterfly, so that’s a thing if it matters to you. I’ve owned several adjustables and this one does well, again – great for someone getting into this at such a price point. I started at a 1 and worked my way up. By 3 with a Derby blade, it didn’t really perform as well as I like. But that’s just my personal experience – everybody’s different.Being an adjustable, this is a great razor for new people to experiment with aggression and see what they like best. I think it’s great as a gift for your kids first razor or a novelty for a husband. If you already own a few adjustables – you know exactly what you’re getting. Past that, it’s all personal preference.Again, at sub-$50 you can’t go wrong with what you get here.

    Seriously A Great Quality Shaver

This is all my fault but I am not a fan. I am 61 years old. I tried and tried but not for me. It feels solid, great weight, great balance, easy to use for someone who can 😃 but not me. If you are good with a a safty razor then I highly recommend. If you have never used one make sure you decide quick so you can return it. I used it for 2 months and kept cutting myself. That was all my fault. I am just inept when it comes to using this. I even tried their best model for 2 months and my wife said enough is enough go back to your old razor. Im tired of watching blood oozing out of my face a breakfast. I kept them to long and waste over $100 dollars. They are to nice to throw away so I hoping to find someone who wants one and I can give him one of these.Again I am extreamly impressed with the quality and extremely disappointed that I could not use it properly

Solide, verstellbar, liegt schwer und gut in der Hand, kann somit idealerweise mit dem Eigengewicht gezogen werden, kein Anpressdruck nötig und sieht sehr gut aus.

Perfectly designed safety razor – highly recommend for any beard type

I was looking for honest reviews about that MEIJI razor before purchasing it and have found some. Although more pictures would have been good and that is the reason I have uploaded so many pictures.Since some people had some negative experience which seems to be very questionable, I have contacted the manufacturer to get first hand information about the product. The service is awesome, extremely helpful and I was very happy with the communication. Now, lets talk about the razor itself. To be honest I was very impressed when I got it. The quality and looks are better than I imagined.I love the weight of the razor and it is perfectly balanced. The writing on the head looks great- it’s not too much at all. Suits the razor just fine. The adjustment nob is very grippy and smooth to turn. In fact the whole handle is very grippy and the size is good, not too big and not too skinny. Not sure what the brass ball on the end of the handle does but it looks good as well :)The opening mechanism work smoothly and with less than two turns it opens up fully. No one ever mentioned different size writing on the razor, which I will do. Numbers 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 are bigger than the numbers in between. Looks cool, I think.Since I have received the razor today, I couldn’t wait to give it a try and I haven’t shaved since at least a week. So, perfect condition and now let’s get into it.IMPRESSIVE! The two different sides seriously make a difference. It shaves much much better than my other adjustable razor which people reckon is the “top shelf”. So, that changed my mind totally about the top shelf razor. MEIJI’s head is much smaller and gets easily under the nose with no issues. Some mentioned that the blade does not sit perfectly in the razor and bends the blade down. That is indeed the case but definitely not an issue what so ever. It shaved just smoothly and I love the two different sides since one is a little more aggressive than the other.About the quality. Yes the bend blade is not a QC (quality control) issue it was designed like that and it does not affect the shaving!!!Two little things I have noticed though is that the smooth side on the head has a rough surface which is not noticeable while shaving, so only noticeable for the eye. The same is with one of the doors. It has a little nick, but does not affect the mechanism or shaving. The material is thick enough and is really just noticeable when you inspect the razor very closely. As mentioned I have used another adjustable razor before which was highly recommended on some websites.I must say that this Vikings Blade Meiji adjustable safety razor is a lot better to use and more comfortable to handle than other ones. What is awesome in my case, it fits perfectly in one of my existing razor stands. If you got the same stand you will be happy with that as well :)Overall, I love the razor and recommend it to everyone. The adjustment makes it perfect for beginners and for the pros out there.

Amazing Craftsmanship, Beautiful to look at and use.

I am so happy with the new Vikings Blade Emperor Meiji razor. I have many razors from different manufacturers- I feel I was always looking for the right one. I was looking at the long handle emperor razor for awhile and when I saw the Meiji with the short handle and red stripe razor I had to try it. Seeing the combination of top opening butterfly doors, gap selection, bronze and black finish, and the red accent line this razor is beautiful. The razor shaves beautifully, It has an open comb side and a flat side, I use the open comb side for my first pass and the flat for the second pass. If your new to this the open comb can be a bit more aggressive- points to Vikings blade for putting both on one razor. The razors’s balance point for holding it is below the blade gap selector and the razors weight feels quite heavy but let the razor do the work and it’s almost effortless. It’s a good razor for beginners because you can adjust the blade gap and once you find the right gap your all set.The Meiji razor’s short wider handle is great for holding as well, the bottom of the handle has a finished bronze conical shape- nice touch. I have to say the finish of the razor is beautifully done. I added two images so you can see it size wise next to Feather razor.Yes it’s a tool, but such a well crafted tool that it’s use is a great pleasure. If your buying for yourself do it, it’s great. If it’s a gift for someone I can’t imagine the recipient would be disappointed in any way -on contrary the would be blown away by this razor.
