Great Razor
I don’t own a badger brush nor relish working some fancy oils and soaps into a lather. I have horrible shaving technique and do it all wrong. I bought this razor after years of using a broken Remington electric and $5 packages of Bic disposables. I shave once or twice a week. I won’t bat an eye at dropping hundreds of dollars on expensive bike parts, but refuse to pay $20 for a haircut so I do it myself. So why should you care about my review? Because I’m a regular guy like you, not Joe Fancybeard in a cardigan. So, when I opened up the package to this hefty, manly razor, and used it to attack a week’s growth on my face and a month of overgrowth on the back of my neck, how did it fare? First off, my rough, improper technique of shaving didn’t result in any more bloodletting than if I’d used a fresh new cheapo disposable. In fact, it was far less. Another pleasant surprise was the lack of blade clogging, no matter how long the hair was that I was shaving. Even the long hairs on the back of my neck were shaved clean with ease, without the million passes and blade cleanings that my multi-blade disposables would have required. This allowed me to get a nice, straight line in back easily… something the previous disposable razors couldn’t do.All in all, I love this razor. I like its weight and feel. I like the blades and options for cheaply replacing them. I especially love the ease of shaving, after days of being too lazy to shave, and how quickly and easily this single blade gets through the growth without clogging and constant cleaning like the multi-blades (2-5) that I’ve used in the past. Apparently, the safety razor was something in the category of: “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” as all the years of fixing and adding blades hasn’t made shaving better or easier, but quite the opposite. I highly recommend this razor, whether it’s your first of this type or you’re replacing a lesser model from that discount store that we all love to hate. You just can’t go wrong with this one.

Tremendous purchase–highly recommended!
I’m truly impressed with this razor–phenomenal craftsmanship, absolutely top-quality materials. The razor is substantial without being heavy, and does its job remarkably well. Not a flaw in the polish (I looked), the plating is really well executed, just screams “quality”. Reminds me of some of the more expensive tools I have—yes, it could have been made cheaper and done the same job, but I guarantee that I’ll be handing this one off to one of my sons, and he will be able to hand it to one of his sons, and so on. It’s built like something absolutely expected to last at least a lifetime. Two full shaves thus far, and there are a couple of newbie DE tips that I learned the hard way, so I thought I’d share. First, it really matters which side of the razor blade is up. The bevel of the blade is on one side, and to create the right cutting angle, that side needed to be towards the handle. Not sure if all blades are that way, but if you tilt the blade’s edge in the light, you can see which side was sharpened. Make sure that side is toward the handle!Second, the Godfather’s cutting depth is a little bit adjustable. The first time I used it, I tightened the razor head completely against the handle, and just could not understand what all the fuss was about—the razor did not reach far enough to cut right at my skin, leaving stubble that required awkward skin manipulation. I could not cut down low enough for a smooth shave, but figured I must be doing something wrong, so I took apart the razor (that’s when I realized I had the blade upside down), and figured out the problem–the blade wasn’t able to reach my skin. The solution is in how the razor blade is held within the head of the razor. When the handle is screwed into the head, it bends the blade into the head itself, forming a slight bow. The bowing action pushes the razor up into the head, and pulls the cutting edges in. Reversing that, when you start to remove the razor head, the bow flattens out and the edges extend a little. I ended up tightening the razor fully, and then reversing it for about 1/4 of a turn. That made all the difference in the world! Second shave was right at my skin, and all of the DE advice online started making a LOT more sense. Before you jump to a sharper blade, if you have been tightening the razor fully, I would try adjusting the cutting action a little, it helped me a lot. Finally, for me, tallow-based shave soap is amazing stuff for this—I tried a few different ones and kept coming back to tallow soap. Julian, make some and I’ll buy yours next time. All in all, I’m extremely pleased with my purchase and the process thus far of converting over to this method of shaving. Definitely worth the extra effort, and I’m really looking forward to seeing what else Vikings Blade comes up with!

YOUR BEST SHAVE EVER!!!
When I first read about Viking Blade’s “The Godfather” I thought “oh boy, here we go again, more hype.” I mean how great can a razor be? Right? Now I am about as manly as a man can be. Not bragging, just telling the truth. I do all the manly stuff, I eat the manly meals, I drink the manly drinks, I know how to treat the ladies. I go to the manly places and I have a huge (now get your minds out of the gutter) collection of razors! Some old some new, some vintage and some from all over the world. So, I have seen them all right? Wrong!!! When I received The God Father in the mail, I could not wait to see what all the riff raff was about. I had to sit down for this one. I sat at my desk and slowly began to “undress” the package. I tenderly peeled away the plastic wrapping. And then I began to slowly open the box. When the custom case appeared, I sensed this would be the beginning of something good. I mean, how cool is that? A CUSTOM case! By now, I’d started to get little “nervous” with anticipation. When I opened the carrying case and peeked inside, I saw a slight glimmer of what appeared to be one of the most sexy and curvaceous shaving instruments I had ever seen! No kidding! By then, I knew I just had to free her from her case. I picked her up and held her for the first time and all I could say was “WOW!” I was holding a work of art in my hands! I immediately loaded her up with a Feather Blade (the manly blade) and brought her to my shower. I lathered up and took my first pass, then another and then another. The whole experience was incredible! The beauty of the razor, the precise, balance and of course, the shave. She glided superbly over every curve of my face (without razor burn or cuts) as she gave me quite possibly the manliest shave I have ever had! Now I am hooked for sure! And you will be too. Warning: if you are a skittish wimp don’t even think of purchasing The God Father. Just stick with the overpriced 5 blade cheapie . But, if you are like me, you will jump at the opportunity to own what I consider to be the sexiest and most beautiful DE razor ever created! Thank you Marotaro and Julian!

He took very small strokes with the razor and I can remember the sound of the razor going over his face being a bit like sandpaper being rubbed over a surface
As young boy in the early 1980s, I remember watching my grandpa use a safety razor when he shaved. He had an old, chipped enamel mug with some soap and a badger brush. I recall the act of him shaving was not rapid process. He usually had a cup of coffee on the medicine cabinet stand and a cigarette hanging from his lips. He took very small strokes with the razor and I can remember the sound of the razor going over his face being a bit like sandpaper being rubbed over a surface. Fast forward to present day. Tired of shaving with the trusty Mach 3 and paying enormous sums of money for their blades, I bought a straight razor. I watched many videos on YouTube on the art and technique of straight razor shaving. On my first go I managed to give myself a nice 6mm scar on my cheek. On that day, I realized that straight razor shaving is really more of a two man job. I shelved that bad boy and haven’t looked back. I returned to the Mach 3- they had me again. While perusing Amazon, I stumble across the Vikings Blade and recall my grandpa and his safety razor. I figure, what the hell, I’ll give it a go. So I drop some coin and buy the razor. It arrives, and I immediately notice that the packaging and manufacture of the blade is all top notch. Extra points from me for it not being produced in China. The literature with the blade recommends that you go online and watch a tutorial on how to shave with said razor, which I dutifully follow. And afterward, feeling quite confident, I plan to shave with it the next day. After washing my face and lathering up with some regular shave gel (didn’t use soap or a badger brush) I began shaving. Guys, this thing is no joke. You absolutely must hold it at the specified angle or, like a cheese slicer, you will neatly slice off a thin layer of skin. The thin blades are scary sharp and will cut through the coarsest of hair. But the tradeoff is the time and effort it takes. You will perform probably a hundred small strokes on your face before it is clean. The video says it may take two shavings. Now I get why my grandpa smoked and drank coffee while shaving. It is a process, and not a quick one. But I also think that taking some time for yourself and doing something well, especially in this fast paced world we live in, is good for the mind and body. The razor itself is weighted nicely and you use that weight to allow the blade to glide over your face. No pressure needed.I give the razor five stars based upon workmanship and design. I give my own safety razor shaving abilities at about a 2. Maybe a 2.5.

First Safety Razor, Blown away!
Perfect Safety Razor for me, it has enough heft and weight and it is easy to use to shave! Definitely recommend!

Just do it….
Have to say I was not going to buy this DE as there was virtually no one online who reviewed it or did a demonstration.Glad I got it, a great razor, shaves well and is well-weighted.The very low profile of the head is a different feel when shaving as it is very silent, with no audible feedback. So takes a while to get use to using for those who like audible feedback when shaving.

Well Crafted for the $$$
I’ve been using a single blade safety razor for 20 years or more, one I bought at an antique store, but it was getting a bit grungy after two decades so I thought I’d spring for a new one. Based on price and user reviews, I purchased the “Chieftain” model from Viking, the rose gold one. I was completely bowled over by the quality of the workmanship, particularly at this price point. It gives a nice, clean shave, feels comfortable in my hand and frankly, looks kick a$$.I liked it so much, in fact, that I decided to order the “Godfather” model for use at my cottage. It also is very well made, though I didn’t realize it lacks the mechanical gizmo that lets you insert a new blade without disassembling the razor. That’s my bad, though; I should have read the description more carefully. So putting in a new blade is a bit more of a hassle, but overall, not that bad. It is a heavy razor and seems a bit more nick-prone than the Chieftain model, but I’m basing that on a single use at this point; maybe I just need to get used to the added weight of the thing.Regardless, they’re both VERY nice razors, amazing really, considering how reasonably priced they are. If you’re still using a “modern,” six-blade, ridiculous piece of plastic that mucks up the environment and requires device-specific, overpriced blades, do yourself a favor and just toss that thing in the trash where it belongs. Once you get used to using a safety razor, just like gramps did, you’ll never be tempted to go back. Also, I found the “gentle” blades that come with the razor (you get five of ‘em) to be more than sufficient to cut my stubble neatly and I’m half Greek with whiskers like a yak!

Exactly what I’m after a safety razor I won’t need to replace
Solid metal, doesn’t corrode to pieces like all the other safety razors at woolies and coles. It will rust if you leave a blade in the head in a wet environment (anode / cathode reaction) but the rust scrubs off really easily.

Careful, these can break easily.
I’ve bought a couple of theses over the last few years, for use in different locations. I enjoyed the heavy feel and the smooth shaves, although it’s also easy to nick your face until you get used to these. I was very disappointed today. I dropped one of these about 12″ into a sink, and the top broke off. Maybe it would be worth investing in a better metal for making these? Still rating them 4 out of 5, as they do work well.

Buen rastrillo.

MY FIRST DE SAFETY RAZOR!!
I just received this new product today with FREE SAME DAY SHIPPING (Amazon amazes me) and can’t say enough about the quality, fit, and finish. I did hours of research before purchasing my first DE razor, and although this is a newer item, I liked what I read on Amazon, as well as the marketing strategies and customer support shown by the company both spoken about in said reviews, and shown to me as soon as I placed my order.Take this review with a grain of salt, as I said this is my very first DE razor, but this thing feels like it should cost twice as much as it does, and compared to other ones that I was looking at for the same price point or even more, I love the modern yet classic look and feel of The Godfather. The chrome is beautifully done, the handle is the perfect length (I have large hands) and the weight and balance is just perfect. The engraving on the top is also top notch. If you’re on the fence, BUY IT. Blame me if you don’t like it, but as for me, I’m sold on Vikings Blade products. I even ordered the brush VIKINGS BLADE Luxury Badger Brush, Heavy Swedish Alloy Base + Obsidian Acrylic, 100% Pure Raw Manliness to go along with it, as well as Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving Cream Bowl, 5.3-Ounce and a stand SimplyBeautiful Deluxe Razor and Brush Stand, Chrome.NOTE: This review is based solely on first thoughts and appearance. I haven’t shaved with it yet, as I’m still waiting on a few items to complete my wet shave kit, but I will update this review later with my thoughts on my first shave, as well as after I become more experienced. As for the product itself, it looks and feels very high dollar. Based on my research and how other DE razors appealed to me, for this price, it simply can’t be beaten. Can’t wait to see what Vikings Blade will come up with in the future. Well done, folks.ONE WEEK UPDATE: Still absolutely loving the razor. First shave went well, only one or two very minor nicks. I have had issues with some razor burn on my neck, and my jaw line is very “chizzled” so it is difficult for me to get a close shave without cutting myself. I don’t think that this is the razor itself, rather my technique. I took a day off just to give my neck and nicks a chance to heal and we’ll see how it goes next time. I have been changing the blades that come with it every 4 shaves, but cannot wait to try my ASTRA blades to see if there is any difference. Rating still stands at 5 stars, as I am fairly certain the issues I am having are 100% my fault, and frankly, I just love the friggin razor. Looks great, feels great, and it was an excellent value for what you pay. Can’t really say much about the blades that come with it until I try the others.

Godfather After 5 Years (and Compared to 6 year Chieftain)
My first safety razor was the VikingsBlade Chieftain (January 2016). I was so impressed that I purchased the Godfather in February 2017. For context, I also own a Merkur 34c and had a popular inexpensive brand (which was so bad I finally threw it out).Comparing the Godfather and Chieftain:- Both razors are hefty and solid. The Godfather is longer (4.5″ vs. 3 5/8″) and a little heavier (100 g, 3.5 oz vs. 85 g, 2.99 oz).- The Godfather seems a bit more aggressive than than the Chieftain, but not in a bad way. Using a sharp blades like a Feather or Wilkinson, the Godfather can give me some nicks. The Chieftain does not. So I prefer a milder Personna or Astra blade with the Godfather.- The Godfather’s 3-piece head bends the razor blade more than the Chieftain (one piece, Twist to Open). This may be why the Godfather excels with mild blades, while the Chieftain excels with sharp blades.- Probably for the same reasons, the Godfather excels with longer strokes, like under the neck. It may also be why my wife likes the Godfather for shaving legs.- Because of the Godfather’s 3-piece head, it is a little easier to clean, but you have to be more careful changing razor blades in the Godfather (I have never cut myself)- The Godfather’s head is sleeker, which is good for shaving right under the nose. (But the Chieftain works fine for me)- Both are high quality. After all these years, they both look and perform like new. No corrosion anywhere. I take good care of them and dip in a jar of cleaning alcohol after most shaves. I periodically put a drop of mineral oil in the moving parts.- They both have a head that covers the whole blade. Many razors have the non-cutting edges sticking out both sides which is not a big risk, but requires one more thing to think about.- The Godfather doesn’t have a knurled handle, but the bulbed shape of the handle naturally stops it from slipping.- The Godfather is a very cool looking razor. The unique handle is similar to an old English Chatsworth style.- Vikingsblade razors are consistently top sellers on Amazon and highly rated. In addition to performance, the VikingsBlade customer service is the best I have ever seen for an Amazon product. At the end of the day, what matters are results. Buy the Godfather (or Chieftain) – you will love it.
